Holiday Flyer Ideas by Month: Wording for Juneteenth, July 4th, Veterans Day and More

Holiday flyer ideas are easiest to plan a month at a time, because the date decides the wording: "join us" for a celebration, "closed" for a notice, "thank you" for a tribute. Below, each month lists its main US holidays with the next dates, headlines and supporting lines, with links to full pages for the October to December holidays. What to put on a holiday flyer

Holiday flyers get skimmed next to other holiday flyers, so the date and what's happening come first. This checklist works for events, sales and closing notices.

1. The holiday, spelled right. "Juneteenth", "Mother's Day", and "Veterans Day" with no apostrophe, which is the Department of Veterans Affairs' spelling.
2. What you're doing. A celebration, a sale, a service, a closing, or a greeting.
3. Day and date, with the weekday. "Saturday, June 19." Fixed-date holidays such as Juneteenth and the 4th of July land on a different weekday each year, so check it every time.
4. Hours. Start and end times for events; for closings, the hour you reopen.
5. Place. A street address, plus the room or the park pavilion.
6. Price or offer. "Free", "$38 per adult" or "20% off everything".
7. Who it's for. "Open to everyone", "Veterans and service members", "Kids 5 to 12".
8. One call to action. "Reserve by Friday, May 7", "RSVP", "Order online".
9. Fine print for offers. Dates the offer runs, in store or online, and any limit.
10. Rain plan for anything outdoors, such as a July cookout or a Labor Day pool party.

Holiday flyer ideas and wording by month

Dates below are the next ones after September 28, 2026. Federal dates come from the US Office of Personnel Management's holiday schedule. When a federal holiday lands on a Saturday, most federal workers get the Friday before off, and when it lands on a Sunday, they get the Monday after.

January: New Year's Day and MLK Day

New Year's Day is Friday, January 1, and Martin Luther King Jr. Day is Monday, January 18.

• New Year: "Closed Friday, January 1. Happy New Year." or "New Year, New Class Schedule: Starts Monday, January 4."
• MLK Day: "MLK Day of Service: Park Cleanup, Monday, January 18, 9 AM to noon. Gloves and coffee provided."

February: a Black History Month flyer, Valentine's Day and Presidents Day

February is Black History Month, and the Library of Congress, the National Archives, the Smithsonian and other federal institutions run a shared site for it. Build a Black History Month flyer around a program, such as a film series, a speaker or a read-in.

• Black History Month: "Black History Month Film Series: Thursdays in February, 7 PM, at the town library." For a church program, add the speaker and the service time.
• Valentine's Day, Sunday, February 14: "Valentine's Brunch for Two, $49 per couple" or "Kids' Valentine Card Workshop, Saturday, February 13, 10 AM." Because the holiday lands on a Sunday, a flyer for Valentine's Day can promote the whole weekend.
• Presidents Day, Monday, February 15: the official federal name is Washington's Birthday, but a sale flyer can say Presidents Day. "Presidents Day Weekend Sale, Saturday to Monday."

If a flyer features a real historical figure, use a real photo from an archive, with its credit line and after checking its use terms, rather than an AI-made portrait of a real person.

March and April: St. Patrick's Day, Easter and Earth Day

St. Patrick's Day is Wednesday, March 17, and Earth Day is Thursday, April 22. Easter moves each year, so check the date before you print.

• Earth Day: "Earth Day Creek Cleanup, Saturday, April 24, 9 AM. Meet at the footbridge."

May: a Mother's Day flyer and Memorial Day

Mother's Day is the second Sunday in May, set by a 1914 presidential proclamation, so the next one is Sunday, May 9. Memorial Day is Monday, May 31.

• Mother's Day for restaurants and shops: "Mother's Day Brunch, seatings at 10 AM and noon" or "Treat Mom: 15% off gift cards through Saturday, May 8."
• Mother's Day for church: "A carnation for every mom after the 10:30 service."
• Memorial Day: "Memorial Day Ceremony at Veterans Park, Monday, May 31, 11 AM. Wreath laying and the reading of names."

Memorial Day honors service members who died in service, so lead with the ceremony and keep any sale on its own flyer. Red poppies belong on this flyer: the VA notes that wearing poppies for the war dead is a Memorial Day tradition in the US.

June: a flyer for Juneteenth, plus Father's Day

Juneteenth marks June 19, 1865, the day Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger's General Order No. 3 announced in Texas that enslaved people there were free. It became a national holiday when President Biden signed the law on June 17, 2021.

• Celebration: "Juneteenth Community Celebration, Saturday, June 19, noon to 6 PM. Live music, a history walk and food vendors."
• Program: "Juneteenth Read-In at the library: stories and history for all ages."
• Closing: "Closed Friday, June 18 in observance of Juneteenth." June 19 is a Saturday in 2027, so federal offices observe it on Friday, June 18.

Father's Day comes the next day. It's the third Sunday in June, which makes it Sunday, June 20. A church or restaurant flyer can say "Father's Day Pancake Breakfast, Sunday, June 20, 8 to 11 AM."

July: a 4th of July flyer and closing notice

Independence Day falls on Sunday, July 4, so the federal holiday is observed on Monday, July 5.

• Events: "Fourth of July Cookout and Fireworks, fireworks at 9:15 PM" or "Independence Day Parade on Main Street, Sunday, July 4, 10 AM."
• Sales: "Fourth of July Sale: 20% off, Thursday, July 1 to Monday, July 5."
• Closing: "Closed Sunday, July 4 and Monday, July 5. Open Tuesday, July 6 at 9 AM."

A flyer for Independence Day can use red, white and blue freely. Use those colors or a few stars on a sale flyer rather than the full flag, since tradition discourages using the flag itself in ads or printing anything on it. Put your sale over fireworks or stars. If you draw bunting, the traditional order is blue on top, white in the middle and red at the bottom.

August: back-to-school season

September: a flyer for Labor Day

Labor Day is Monday, September 6.

October: Halloween, fall festivals and trunk or treat

Hanukkah runs from sundown on Friday, December 4 to nightfall on Saturday, December 12. Christmas is Friday, December 25, and New Year's Eve is Thursday, December 31. A new month flyer is a greeting posted on the first day of a month, with a short blessing, the month's theme or a month-long offer. Share it as a Portrait social post on the 1st.

Design tips for holiday flyers

Use the holiday's colors, but not for the small text. Red type on a blue background is hard to read on a 4th of July flyer. Keep the date and address in white on navy, or navy on white, and save red for the headline.

Keep remembrance and selling apart. Lead a Memorial Day or Veterans Day flyer with the ceremony or the thank-you. Put the sale on its own flyer, or in a small line at the bottom.

Keep one layout all year. Put your logo, address and hours in the same spots on every holiday flyer, and change only the headline, colors and picture. Keep a copy of each flyer's wording, so next year's version only needs new dates.

Say when you reopen. A closing notice that only says "Closed Monday" sends people to your door on Tuesday unsure. Add "Open Tuesday at 9 AM."
