What to put on a birthday party flyer

1. Whose birthday, and which one. "Theo Turns 5" or "Rosa's 40th". On a kids' flyer, make the number the biggest thing on the page.
2. Day, date, start and end time. "Saturday, November 7, 2 PM to 4 PM." The end time tells parents when to come back.
3. The address and how to find you. "Pavilion 3 at Birchfold Park, 900 Ridge Road. Look for the green balloons."
4. Who's invited. "The whole class", "Siblings welcome" or "Adults only".
5. One RSVP contact and a deadline. A week before the party gives you time to order food and goody bags.
6. Drop-off or stay. "Drop-off party, pickup at 4" or "Grown-ups stay and play".
7. Food and an allergy question. "Pizza and cake served. Tell us about any food allergies when you RSVP." The FDA counts nine major food allergens, among them milk, eggs, wheat, peanuts and tree nuts, so ask ahead instead of at the cake table.
8. What to bring or wear. "Swimsuit and towel" or "Grip socks required at the trampoline park".
9. A gift note, if you want one. "No gifts, please" or "Book swap: bring one wrapped book". The Emily Post Institute notes that gifts are usually part of a kids' party, but not always, so leave the line off if you have nothing to say about gifts.
10. The theme. "Dinosaur dig", "Space camp", "Under the sea".
11. Surprise instructions. "It's a surprise: arrive by 7:15, he walks in at 7:30."
12. Parking. "Park in the north lot, not on Ridge Road."

Themes that stay original work best on a public flyer: dinosaurs, outer space, construction trucks, a fairy garden, an ocean with made-up sea creatures. Skip any description that points to one famous movie or show even without its name, because a signature outfit, sidekick or color scheme gives the character away.

Birthday flyer design and backgrounds

A birthday flyer design works when the name and age are read first and the background stays out of the way of the details.

Make the age a design element. A giant "5" or "40" in balloon letters tells the whole story from across a school hallway. Put the name right next to it.

Pick a birthday flyer background with a quiet middle. Confetti around the edges, balloons in one corner or a soft color blend all leave room for text.
