Photoroom counts every saved image as an export, and its heavier AI tools draw on the credit pool too. On Pro, the 8,000 credits cover up to 400 Edit with AI generations, well short of the 1,000 exports, so heavy use of that tool runs out of credits first. At three images a month, a $9 Pebblely Lite plan works out to $3 per image, which is where paying per image in Toybox costs less.
Four checks before you pick the best AI for product photos
Work through them in order.
- Your starting point. Photo-based tools (Shopify, Product Studio, Photoroom, Pebblely, Toybox) restage a product you photographed. For a flat design on a shirt or mug, the best product mockup generator is usually a template one, because it places artwork at a fixed spot; the Placeit alternatives comparison covers those in depth.
- Where you sell. Shopify's editor and Google's Product Studio work where your listings already live, and Product Studio can add a new image straight to a Merchant Center product.
- Images per month. Use the cost table above. Twelve Toybox mockups come to 900 credits, about $9 at top-up prices, which is Pebblely Lite's monthly price. Below that, per-image credits avoid a subscription; at dozens or hundreds a month, a monthly plan costs less.
- Marketplace rules. Amazon requires a pure white main image (RGB 255, 255, 255) and wants photorealistic AI-generated people tagged in the file's metadata. Best AI for product images already in your store: Shopify and Google
Shopify's AI image editor lives in the admin's file editor and costs nothing extra on any plan for now. It restages an image from a short prompt, swaps in a flat color or a transparent background behind the product, and on desktop can widen a photo's background with Crop and transform. The trade-offs are size and volume: output lands near 1 megapixel, and it returns a single scene per try.
Google's Product Studio is free in Merchant Center, and Shopify merchants can reach it through Google's own Shopify app (Google and YouTube). Each scene description returns four versions, and the same panel removes backgrounds, raises resolution and makes short videos. Packaged goods shot head-on suit it best. Photos with hands aren't supported, and regulated categories such as alcohol, drugs and medical devices are excluded.
Photoroom
Photoroom is a product photo editor with AI Backgrounds and AI Fashion Models on every paid plan. Pro is US$12.99 a month, or US$7.50 a month billed yearly, with 8,000 AI credits and 1,000 exports a month. Max is US$34.99 a month, or US$20.99 billed yearly, with 25,000 AI credits, 3,000 exports and the Video Generator. Core tools such as the Background Remover, Retouch and AI Expand don't use credits, while AI Backgrounds, Virtual Model and Edit with AI use up credits from the pool. 4K image and video output starts on Ultra, at US$99 a month or US$82.50 billed yearly. It fits a store with hundreds of products that wants background removal and scene generation in one app.
Pebblely
Pebblely sells AI product photos by the number of images per month. Lite is US$9 a month for 30 images, Basic US$19 for 200 and Pro US$39 for 500. Each plan includes 40+ background themes and custom prompts, and Basic and Pro add bulk generation. Yearly billing gives two or more months free. It fits a seller with many simple products, such as jars, bottles and boxes, who wants a predictable monthly count.
Template tools with AI extras: Canva, Mockey and Printify
These start from a flat design, not a product photo. Canva Mockups can also turn a branded photo into a mockup, with AI finding surfaces for the design, and Canva Free allows up to 2,500 mockups. Mockey pairs its templates with AI tools such as AI Photoshoot and AI Change Background, and its paid plans come with AI credits (600 a year on Starter, US$5.70 a month billed yearly, which is also where commercial use starts). Toybox Product Mockup
Product Mockup places a photo of your real product into one of seven preset scenes (Studio, Workspace, In hand, On a model, Store shelf, Outdoors, Flat lay), plus Custom for a setting you type yourself. It tries to preserve the item as photographed, and staging notes go in "Anything else?". Sizes run from Square 1:1 and Portrait 4:5 to Story 9:16, or Auto to match your photo. Each image currently costs 75 credits, on the Free plan, with credits sold without a subscription. The limits: it doesn't wrap a flat design onto a blank product, there's no pixel-size setting, Studio's white backdrop is AI-made rather than guaranteed pure white, and small label text needs checking. Which one should you pick
Pick by the job, then by the price at your volume.
- A Shopify store refreshing 20 product images. Start with Shopify's AI image editor, since it costs nothing extra right now. Check each image's size against your theme before replacing the original.
- Running Google Shopping ads. Use Product Studio, which can add images straight to Merchant Center. Use another tool for products held in a hand.
- A catalog of 300 bottles and jars. Pebblely Pro, US$39 for 500 images a month, works out under 8 cents an image, far less than paying per image in Toybox at that volume. Photoroom Pro fits if you also need background removal and fashion models.
- Selling printed shirts through a POD supplier. Use that supplier's free mockup generator or a template tool, where the print sits exactly where you placed it.
- An Etsy maker adding two or three new products a month. Toybox Product Mockup, paid per image with no plan to cancel, costs less than Pebblely Lite's US$9 a month as long as you stay under about a dozen images a month.

Product Mockup needs one photo of the product against a plain backdrop, in JPG or PNG format and 10 MB at most.
- Sign in, open Product Mockup, and drop the photo into "Product photo".
- Pick a Scene, or choose Custom and describe your own.
