They're written for Toy Studio in Toybox AI, where you add the selfie and paste the prompt into "Extra details". How a good action figure AI prompt is built
A prompt that turns yourself into an action figure has six parts. Leave one out and you get whatever the AI picks.
- Likeness. "Keep my face, curly hair and glasses recognizable." Name two or three real features.
- Packaging. A clear blister pack on a printed card, a tall window box for the doll look, or a deluxe collector's box.
- Box title. One short title in quotes, usually your name plus a job or a joke. In Toy Studio, type the same words in "Name on the box", which takes up to 40 characters.
- Accessories. Three or four objects, each in its own slot. A blister card only has room for a few.
- Outfit and pose. What the figure wears and how it stands.
- Box colors. Two colors, plus a pattern if you want one.

Where the AI action figure trend came from
The AI action figure trend took off in April 2025. On April 11, BBC News described people uploading a selfie to a tool like ChatGPT with written instructions for the packaging and the items to include, then adding their own name, job title and outfit. The doll and toy box versions are the same idea in different packaging.
Many early prompts asked the AI to copy the box and lettering of famous toy lines. The versions here describe an original box instead, because a real brand's logo isn't yours to print. Results also missed in ways people shared for laughs: dolls that looked nothing like their owners, and, in the BBC's own test, a doll that spread out below the packaging it was meant to sit in.
Tips for better action figure results
Use a head-and-shoulders photo in daylight. Toy Studio's upload note says a visible face gives the best likeness. Pick a photo where your face fills a good part of the frame, with no sunglasses, hat shadow or heavy filter.
Name features, not compliments. "Round glasses and a gap in my front teeth" gives the AI something to keep, while "handsome" gives it nothing. Add your eye color and hair color if the first result gets them wrong.
Keep the box title short. Two to four words in quotes, spelled exactly as you want them. Long lines of small text are where letters go wrong, and Toy Studio's "Name on the box" stops at 40 characters anyway.
Leave brands, logos and employers off the box. Write "a tiny laptop", not a laptop brand, and "Nurse", not the name of your hospital.
Plan for the shape. Toy Studio always makes a 3:4 image. That is the tallest shape the Instagram feed shows without cropping, so the whole box fits in the post.
Check what the box gives away. A title with your full name, a job title and a badge-shaped accessory can add up to your employer and hometown. Use a first name or a nickname for public posts, ask before you upload anyone else's photo, and read Toybox's privacy policy for how uploads are handled.
