Midjourney vs ChatGPT is a choice between an art tool and an assistant. Midjourney returns four images per prompt in a house style tuned for looks, with settings you can push further. ChatGPT works inside a conversation, so you change a picture by asking for the change. Google's Nano Banana 2, which makes the pictures in the Gemini app, is the third option here because it costs nothing to start. Midjourney vs ChatGPT for image generation: look and style
Midjourney puts the look of the picture first, and ChatGPT puts doing what you asked first. V8.2 became Midjourney's default model on July 24, 2026, and Midjourney says the update centers on looks, image quality and Personalization. Personalization profiles and moodboards steer it toward your taste, built from images you choose, and the Raw option strips out the default styling when it gets in the way.
In ChatGPT, the look comes from your words and your follow-up requests. Plus and Pro add images with thinking, and OpenAI's Plus page promises faster, higher-quality image creation. On the Art category of Arena, the public voting leaderboard renamed from LMArena in January 2026, OpenAI fills the first three spots as of September 24, 2026. Midjourney isn't on Arena at all, so there is no public score that compares the two, and style is the factor where your own eye decides.
Following a detailed prompt
ChatGPT's advantage with a long prompt is the conversation: when it misses an object, you ask for it in the next message. Midjourney says V8.1 improved at reading prompts and keeping small details, and it recommends Raw mode for tighter prompt adherence. OpenAI's own guide names the gap on its side: in a structured layout, elements may not sit exactly where you asked.
Nano Banana 2 lists stronger instruction following and better world knowledge among its features, and Google suggests it for diagrams and infographics where the facts need to be right. A prompt with counted objects in fixed positions, like prompt 2 below, shows the difference quickly.
Text inside the image
For words on a sign or a label, the makers' documentation points toward ChatGPT and Gemini over Midjourney. Midjourney's text guide, which covers version 6 onward, tells you to wrap the words in double quotes (single quotes fail) and warns that short phrases in Latin letters come out most reliably. ChatGPT adds text when you ask, and Gemini's help center says Nano Banana 2 spells text more accurately in every language the app supports.

Editing an image you already have
All three can change an existing image, and they do it in different ways:
- Midjourney. On the website, the Editor changes part of an image; in Discord it's Vary Region. The Edit Model takes your own images plus plain text instructions. Inpainting or outpainting an HD image brings it down to SD, and you upscale it again afterward.
- ChatGPT. Upload a photo or pick a generated one, then describe the change, with or without the selection tool. OpenAI cautions that a highlighted area isn't always exact, so a change can leak outside it.
- Gemini. Upload one or more images and describe what to change in the chat. Editing is limited to account holders aged 18 or over, and US users can link their Google Photos library to pick pictures from it.
Price, free use and limits
ChatGPT costs less to start, and Midjourney is the one that publishes what you get: GPU time per plan and GPU minutes per job. As of September 2026, the plans that include image creation are:

Midjourney's GPU speed table puts a standard prompt at 0.8 GPU minutes and an HD prompt at 1.3, so Basic's 200 Fast minutes cover roughly 250 standard prompts, each returning four images. Extra Fast time costs $4 an hour on every plan. OpenAI doesn't offer yearly billing for Go, Plus or Pro, while Midjourney takes 20% off for paying the year upfront.
Privacy and who owns the images
The biggest practical gap is visibility. Midjourney's terms make everything you create visible to others and open to remixing by default, and Stealth Mode, which keeps images private on a best-efforts basis, comes only with Pro and Mega. OpenAI saves your images under Images in your own account, and the only way to remove one from that page is to delete the chat it was made in.
On ownership, OpenAI's terms give the output to you, and Google's terms say it won't claim ownership of original content you generate. Midjourney's terms grant you ownership too, with one condition that matters to businesses: companies earning over $1,000,000 a year need Pro or Mega to own their images. Midjourney vs Gemini and Nano Banana 2
In the Gemini app, choosing the Flash or Pro model gets you Nano Banana 2, which accepts several reference images; a faster Nano Banana 2 Lite runs when Flash-Lite is selected, and Google says it isn't built for multiple references or repeated edits. Paid subscribers get a "Redo with Pro" option for extra detail. Against Midjourney, the trade is price and workflow: Gemini is free and conversational, while Midjourney is paid and adds style controls such as Personalization profiles, moodboards and style references. Midjourney vs DALL-E
People still search "midjourney vs dalle", but DALL-E is gone. OpenAI removed its DALL-E GPT from ChatGPT on August 30, 2026, and its API stopped serving the DALL-E 2 and DALL-E 3 models on May 12, 2026. Midjourney vs Leonardo AI
Leonardo.Ai offers its own models and a pick of outside ones in a single app, and it has a free plan: 150 fast tokens a day, with public images. Its Essential tier, $12 monthly or up to 20% less on a yearly plan, is the cheapest way to make your images private. Run each prompt in Midjourney, ChatGPT and Gemini with the same shape, and give each result 1 to 5 points on one factor per prompt: look, accuracy, spelling, realism, consistency and labels. After prompt 2, test editing too: ask each tool to "swap the lemons for limes and leave the rest untouched", then look for anything else that moved.

- You illustrate for a living and want one art direction across a project. Pick Midjourney Standard at $30 a month, which adds unlimited Relax images, and move to Pro if clients need the work kept private.
- You write long, specific prompts and fix details by asking. Pick ChatGPT Plus at $20 a month.
- Your budget is zero and the job is editing photos you took. Pick Gemini's free plan, and expect 1K downloads.
- Your images must stay private and your budget is small. Pick ChatGPT Go at $8 a month, because Midjourney images stay public on every plan below Pro at $60.
