A Midjourney alternative usually has to solve one of four problems: Midjourney's website offers no trial, every plan is a subscription, anyone can see your images until you reach the Pro tier, and getting an exact result often means learning its settings. Discord is no longer on that list, since Midjourney now runs on its own website. Why people look for a Midjourney alternative

The limits documented on Midjourney's own pages concern access, visibility and control, not image quality.

• No free way to try it on the web. Midjourney's help center confirms there's no trial on the website or in Discord; the one exception is a short trial in its niji·journey phone app.
• Subscriptions only. All four plans renew monthly or yearly, from Basic at $10 to Mega at $120 a month. Buying more Fast time, at $4 per hour, still requires a plan.
• Public by default. Midjourney's terms let anyone see and remix your images unless you turn on Stealth Mode, which only Pro and Mega include.
• A revenue rule for companies. Businesses above $1 million in yearly revenue can only own their images on Pro or Mega.
• Settings to learn. Results are shaped by options such as version, aspect ratio, Raw, Stylize, Weird and Variety. On the website you set them in a panel instead of typing parameters like --v, but there are still many choices to understand.

If none of these points costs you anything, Midjourney is still a strong pick for its particular look.

Free AI Midjourney alternatives and their catches

Six free AI tools can stand in for Midjourney, and each one limits something different:

• ChatGPT Free. Image creation is part of the free tier, at a slower pace and a lower cap. ChatGPT tells you when you reach the limit, and upgrading to Plus resets it.
• Gemini. No charge with a Google login, and it edits photos you upload. Downloads are 1K on the free plan, and usage refills every few hours until a weekly ceiling.
• Ideogram Free. Weekly slow credits go to eligible accounts that log in through Google, Apple or Microsoft. Everything made on the free plan is posted publicly, and only one job can run or wait at a time.
• Leonardo.Ai Free. 150 fast tokens a day, reset daily. Images are public, and Leonardo holds rights to them while granting you a commercial-use license.
• Adobe Firefly Free. A small allowance of free generations that refills every day.
• Microsoft Designer. Free with a Microsoft account, but only for personal projects, not business use.

Each free tier above has a catch: speed, privacy or commercial rights. Toybox AI isn't a free option: its 20 sign-up credits won't cover one image, which currently costs 50.

Open source Midjourney alternatives

Open-source image models are free to download and run on your own computer, so the cost moves to a graphics card and setup time.

• FLUX.2 [klein] 4B. Black Forest Labs releases it under Apache 2.0, which allows commercial use, and lists about 13 GB of video memory as enough, naming the NVIDIA RTX 3090 and 4070 and above. One model covers generating from text, editing a picture and combining several reference images.
• Qwen-Image-2512. Alibaba's Qwen team releases it under Apache 2.0 as well, and its model card highlights better text rendering and facial detail. At 20 billion parameters it is five times the size of FLUX.2 [klein] 4B, so check your hardware before you download it.
• FLUX.2 [dev]. A 32-billion-parameter model whose weights carry a non-commercial license. Its model card still lets you use the pictures it makes for commercial work, within that license.
• Stable Diffusion 3.5. Stability AI's Community License lets individuals and companies under $1 million in yearly revenue use it at no cost, and Stability says you own what it generates.
• ComfyUI to run them. A node-based app with a desktop version for Windows and macOS; the manual install supports NVIDIA, AMD, Intel and Apple Silicon graphics.

Check the public scores before you buy hardware for any of them. On the Arena text-to-image leaderboard (called LMArena until January 2026) of September 24, 2026, FLUX.2 [dev] ranks 36th of 80, Qwen-Image-2512 42nd (the highest-ranked model with an Apache 2.0 license) and FLUX.2 [klein] 4B 68th, all behind closed models from OpenAI, Google and others. Ideogram's docs also list open weights among the ways to get Ideogram 4.0, and Arena ranks that model 18th with an "Ideogram Open Model" license tag, so read that license before any commercial use. Midjourney isn't on that board, so there's no direct score against it.

ChatGPT Images

Switching to ChatGPT Images is simplest if you already use ChatGPT, because you describe the picture in plain words and ask for changes the same way. OpenAI's help center lists an aspect ratio picker, templates for posters and logos, transparent backgrounds on request, and sketch-to-image in the mobile app. It's on every plan: Free with limits, Go at $8 a month and Plus at $20. OpenAI names the catches itself: a detailed request can run for minutes, and a selected edit can bleed past the area you marked. It fits someone who wants results without learning any settings.

Gemini with Nano Banana 2

Gemini is the no-cost way to get a chat-style image tool with photo editing. Picking the Flash or Pro model in Gemini brings in Nano Banana 2, and Google lists local edits, a consistent look for the same person across images, and combining several uploads into one new picture. The Free plan is $0 with 1K downloads; Google AI Plus ($4.99 a month) and Google AI Pro ($19.99) add higher limits and 2K downloads. Adults only for editing: Google sets the minimum at 18. It fits someone who mainly retouches their own photos.

Ideogram

Ideogram suits pictures that carry a few words, and its documentation centers on type for logos, branding projects and print-on-demand products. It also offers a prompt helper that turns a one-line idea into a longer, more detailed prompt, plus background removal and replacement and aspect ratios from 1:3 to 3:1. The Plus plan runs $20 monthly or $180 a year and includes a thousand priority credits a month plus private images; Pro runs $60 monthly or $504 a year. Subscription credits lapse at each renewal, and paid plans have no trial. It fits poster headlines and logo concepts.

Leonardo.Ai

Leonardo.Ai, which Canva bought in 2024, puts its own models next to outside ones and lets paying members train a personal model on a handful of their own images, usually 10 to 20. Essential costs $12 a month, with up to 20% off on yearly billing, and includes 8,500 fast tokens and private images. The limit is budgeting: the number of tokens an image uses changes with each model and action, so a plan doesn't buy a fixed number of images. Toybox Image Generator

Toybox's Image Generator has no parameters to learn. You describe the picture in "Describe your image", choose a shape under Size (Square, Portrait, Landscape, Story or Wide), and can attach as many as 3 reference photos. Switching on "Enhanced quality", meant for designs with lettering, currently adds 45 credits. The base price is currently 50 credits an image, about half a dollar at top-up rates, no plan required, and Toybox doesn't currently add watermarks to AI results. The honest limits: one image per run, where Midjourney returns four, and no resolution setting.

Which one should you pick

• You like Midjourney's look and don't mind a public gallery. Stay with Midjourney Basic, or pay $96 for a year.
• You've never used prompt settings and don't want to. Use ChatGPT or Gemini and describe what you want in a sentence.
• You have a gaming PC with an NVIDIA RTX 3090, 4070 or newer. Try FLUX.2 [klein] 4B in ComfyUI, since its Apache 2.0 license covers commercial use.
• The image has to carry a short headline. Try Ideogram, and read how Ideogram and Midjourney handle lettering.
• You make a handful of images a month and would rather not subscribe. Use Toybox Image Generator and pay per image.
