How Leonardo's tokens work
Tokens are Leonardo's currency for everything: images, videos, background removal and upscales. Leonardo says the number of tokens an action uses depends on how much computing it takes, and that one token doesn't match any particular image size or action, so a plan buys a pool of tokens rather than a set number of images.

Four rules shape the real price:
- Unused tokens roll over, up to a cap. On every paid plan the rollover bank holds three times the monthly allowance (25,500 is 3 x 8,500), and tokens beyond that cap don't carry over.
- Top-ups need a subscription. Top-up packs never expire and ignore the rollover cap, but Leonardo sells them only to paid users and they work only while you're subscribed. Free accounts can't top up.
- Relaxed mode covers a short list of models. Premium and Ultimate keep generating after tokens run out, at lower priority, with six models such as Lucid Origin, Phoenix 1.0 and FLUX Dev.
- Outside models always use tokens. OpenAI's GPT Image 1, Ideogram, Nano Banana, the FLUX Kontext models, Seedream and others aren't eligible for relaxed generation on any plan.
Why people look for a Leonardo AI alternative
The reasons you can confirm on Leonardo's own pricing page are about predictability and rights.
- No fixed price per image. Because tokens vary by model and settings, you learn what an image costs only by making it.
- Free-plan images aren't yours. On the free tier Leonardo keeps the right to use, copy, change and share what you create, and your images are public. You get a non-exclusive license to use them commercially, but you don't own them.
- Topping up means subscribing. A casual user who runs out on the free plan has to start a paid plan to buy more.
- The outside models don't get the unlimited lane. Leonardo's catalog includes well-known third-party models, and those draw tokens every time, even on Ultimate.
- Canva owns it. Canva announced the acquisition on July 30, 2024, which matters if you're leaving Canva's products.
There's also a public quality signal. On the text-to-image leaderboard of Arena (called LMArena until January 2026) dated September 24, 2026, where visitors pick the better of two unnamed images, Leonardo's own Lucid Origin ranks 73rd of 80 models. Several of the outside models Leonardo offers rank well above it, but those are the ones that always use tokens.

The free options differ most on visibility and ownership, which is exactly where Leonardo's free tier is strictest.

Adobe Firefly's free plan allows a limited number of generations each day, and Microsoft Designer is free but only for personal projects. Those last two columns hold the catches to weigh alongside the price. Toybox AI isn't a free option: sign-up gives 20 credits, and an image currently costs 50.
Open source Leonardo AI alternatives
Running an open model yourself removes the token meter, and it's the nearest thing to Leonardo's personal model training, because you can fine-tune the weights on your own images. You pay in hardware and setup time instead, and nobody else sees your images unless you share them.
- Stable Diffusion 3.5. A route for custom training on your own images. Stability AI's Community License allows fine-tunes, LoRAs and retrains at no cost if you earn under $1 million a year, and it says you own the outputs of your fine-tunes.
- FLUX.2 [klein] 4B. Apache 2.0, so the weights can be used commercially. Black Forest Labs says it needs roughly 13 GB of graphics memory and handles text-to-image, editing and several reference images in one model.
- FLUX.2 [dev]. Larger, at 32 billion parameters, and its weights come under a non-commercial license. Black Forest Labs still allows commercial use of the images it generates, as that license describes.
- ComfyUI. A node-graph app for running these models on your own machine; its desktop download covers Windows and macOS.
The trade-off is polish. Nothing is hosted for you, and the small open models score near Leonardo's own: on Arena's September 24 board, FLUX.2 [klein] 4B ranks 68th of 80 and Stable Diffusion 3.5 Large 79th, with Lucid Origin between them at 73rd.

Ideogram also runs on credits, split into priority credits for fast jobs and unlimited slow credits on Plus and Pro, while Leonardo's unlimited relaxed lane starts at Premium ($30). Ideogram Plus lists 1,000 priority credits a month at $20, or $15 a month paid yearly, and Pro lists 3,500 at $60, or $42 a month paid yearly; both include private images. Top-ups are sold to paid plans, carry over from month to month, stay usable after a subscription ends, and expire a year after purchase. Unused subscription credits expire each cycle. Ideogram's documentation singles out lettering inside images as a strength, and Ideogram claims no ownership of what you make. It fits logo ideas and poster headlines.
Midjourney
Midjourney measures use in GPU time instead of tokens: Basic at $10 a month includes 3.3 Fast hours, and Standard at $30 adds Relax Mode, which makes as many images as you like at a slower pace. The website and Discord offer no trial. Images stay public below Pro ($60) and Mega ($120), and Midjourney's terms tie ownership for companies above $1,000,000 in annual revenue to those two plans. It fits artists who want one strong house style and make a lot of images each month.
ChatGPT Images
ChatGPT charges a flat monthly price with no tokens to track: Go is $8, Plus is $20 and Pro starts at $100, where OpenAI describes image creation as unlimited within abuse guardrails. OpenAI doesn't offer yearly billing for these plans, and it says Plus limits can vary when demand is high. You create and edit by chatting, and OpenAI's terms assign the output to you. It fits someone who already pays for ChatGPT and makes images now and then.
Adobe Firefly
Firefly's monthly credits reset each billing cycle, while Leonardo banks unused tokens up to a cap. The entry plan, Firefly Standard, is US$9.99 a month with unlimited standard image generations and 2,000 credits for partner models, video and audio, and a free tier allows a limited number of generations each day. Adobe describes the Firefly models it built as commercially safe, naming licensed stock images from Adobe Stock and out-of-copyright public domain work as their training data. The outside models it also hosts, from companies such as Google and OpenAI, don't carry that label. It fits brand and marketing work where a client asks about training data.
Toybox Image Generator
Toybox's Image Generator currently costs 50 credits per standard image, or 95 with "Enhanced quality" for designs with words, and the lower-cost Image Generator Lite currently costs 35 credits for a 1K image. Where Leonardo is better: Toybox plan credits refresh each billing cycle and don't roll over, while Leonardo banks unused tokens. Each run makes one image from your description and up to 3 reference photos. It fits someone who makes a few images a month and wants to know each price in advance.

- You train models on your own art and switch between many models. Stay with Leonardo, and choose Premium if you want the unlimited relaxed lane.
- You want free images that belong to you. Use ChatGPT Free or Gemini.
- You have a capable graphics card and want no meter at all. Run FLUX.2 [klein] 4B or Stable Diffusion 3.5 in ComfyUI.
