The fastest way to make a flyer on Word is to open one of Microsoft's flyer templates and swap in your own words and pictures. Word for the web does this at no cost with a free Microsoft account. Below are the steps for a template, for a blank page with your own layout, and for tear-off tabs, the same job in Google Docs and PowerPoint, and how to drop a flyer designed elsewhere into Word to add a scannable QR code and tabs.
4 ways to make a flyer in Word, Docs or PowerPoint
All four keep your text editable and can save a PDF for the print shop. As of September 2026:
| Method | Works on | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Word for the web, from a template | Any browser | Free with a Microsoft account | A quick event, sale or holiday flyer |
| Word desktop, from a template or blank | Windows and Mac | Microsoft 365 or a desktop version such as Word 2024 | Full control of layout, tear-off tabs |
| Google Docs | Any browser | Comes with any Google Account | Text-heavy flyers and shared editing |
| PowerPoint | Windows, Mac and the web | Free on the web with a Microsoft account | Flyers with pieces you want to drag anywhere |

How to make a flyer in Microsoft Word from a template
A template hands you a finished layout, so the work is swapping in your details. In the Word desktop app for Windows:
- Click File, then New.
- Type "flyer" into the search box for online templates and press Enter, then double-click the design you want.
- Click each sample line and replace it: the headline first, then the weekday and date, the start time, the street address and the phone number or website.
- Delete the sample picture and add yours with Insert, then Pictures, then This Device. Drag a corner handle to resize it.
- Check the whole page at full size, then save it as a PDF with File, then Save a Copy.
Flyer templates for Word on the web
Microsoft's template site also keeps flyer templates that open straight in Word for the web. You sign in with a free Microsoft account, the same one that opens PowerPoint for the web. Pick a design and change the words and colors in the browser. To make the print file, click File, then Print, choose Save as PDF under Printer, and click Save. Microsoft describes the result as a basic PDF that holds the layout and formatting.
How to make a flyer on Word from a blank page
Starting blank takes longer but lets you place every piece yourself. These steps are for Word for Microsoft 365 on Windows:
- Open a blank page. Click File, then New, then Blank document.
- Shrink the margins. Word gives every page a one-inch margin. Go to Layout, then Margins, then Custom Margins, and set all four to 0.5 inch. On letter paper that leaves a 7.5 x 10 inch area.
- Pick the orientation. Go to Layout, then Orientation, and choose Portrait for a wall flyer or Landscape for a counter sign.
- Set a background color if you want one: Design, then Page Color, then pick a color, or Fill Effects for a gradient.
- Add the headline. On the Insert tab, pick WordArt and a style, then type the event name over the "Your text here" placeholder. Use the Home tab for the date and details underneath: bold, a larger size, one font.
- Add a picture. Insert, then Pictures, then This Device. Select the picture, click Layout Options, and choose Behind Text to put words over it, or Square to let text wrap around it.
- Pin it. Go to Picture Format, then Wrap Text, then Fix Position on Page, so the picture stays put while you edit.
- Add color blocks. Pick Shapes from the Insert tab for a band behind the date or a circle behind a price.
Keep the order of sizes strict: the event name biggest, the day and date next, then time, place and one line of detail.
Add tear-off tabs in Word
Tear-off tabs let people take your phone number with them, and a one-row table is the easiest way to make them.
- Click below the last line of flyer text, where the tabs should go.
- Go to Insert, then Table, drag across the grid to highlight 8 columns and 1 row, and click.
- In the first cell, type the service on one line and the phone number on the next, such as "Dog walking" and "555-0126". Press Enter a few more times until the row is about 2 inches tall.
- Copy that cell's text into the other seven cells.
- After printing, cut along each vertical line up to the table's top edge.
With half-inch margins, 8 tabs are about 0.94 inch wide each and 10 tabs are 0.75 inch, so 8 leaves room for a phone number on one line.
Save and print the flyer
For a print shop, save a PDF. In Word, click File, then Save a Copy (or Save As for a file you haven't saved), click Browse, choose PDF in the file type list, and click Save. Microsoft suggests PDF for files headed to professional printing because a PDF keeps its look on most computers. To print at home, click File, then Print, page through the preview, set how many copies you want, and click Print. How to make a flyer on Google Docs
Google Docs suits flyers that are mostly words, like a sign-up sheet or a class schedule, and it's free with any Google Account.
- Look for a template. On the Docs home screen, click Template Gallery. Google's help lists resumes, budgets and order forms among its own templates, so if no flyer template for Google Docs fits, start a blank document.
- Switch to pages format. Page size, margins and picture layouts don't work in pageless format. Click File, then Page setup, and select Pages at the top.
- Set the page. In the same Page setup window, choose Orientation, Paper size, Margins and Page color, then click OK.
- Add an image. Click Insert, then Image, then Upload from computer. Click the image and choose a layout: In line, Wrap text, Break text, Behind text or In front of text.
- Put text on top of a picture or shape. Click Insert, then Drawing, then New. In the drawing window, add a Shape, then a Text Box or Word Art, and type the headline.
- Save a PDF. In Chrome, click File, then Print, set Destination to Save as PDF, and click Save. File, then Download, also lets you choose a file type.
How to make a flyer in PowerPoint
PowerPoint treats every piece of text and every picture as an object you can drag anywhere, which suits a flyer with overlapping parts. The catch is the slide size.
- Open the Design tab, choose Slide Size, and pick Custom Slide Size.
- Set the orientation to Portrait and type 8.5 in for the width and 11 in for the height. PowerPoint also accepts centimeters and pixels.
- If PowerPoint asks how to scale existing content, choose Ensure Fit.
- Add pictures with Insert, then Pictures, and type text into text boxes.
- Save it with File, then Export, choose PDF in the file type list, and pick Standard (publishing online and printing).
Skip the "Letter Paper (8.5x11 in)" option in the Slide Size list. Microsoft's own size table puts it at 10 x 7.5 inches, a landscape slide, and says the default Widescreen slide won't fit a letter page without scaling down. Every paper size and its pixel count are in flyer sizes in inches, cm and pixels.
Tips for a clean flyer in Word or Docs
- Use PNG or JPG logos. Office has turned off inserting EPS images, so ask your designer for a PNG version of the logo.
- Size photos for print. A picture that fills a 7.5-inch-wide area needs about 2250 pixels across at 300 pixels per inch. A small web image stretched to that width prints blurry.
- One font family. Change size and weight, not typefaces. Two fonts at most.
- Keep text off the edges. Leave at least the half-inch margin clear so nothing important sits near the trim.
- Print one test page and read it from across the room before you print the rest.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The picture jumps when you type | It's set to In Line with Text | Select it, click Layout Options, choose another layout, then Fix Position on Page |
| Page setup options are missing in Docs | The document is in pageless format | Click File, then Page setup, and select Pages |
| A PowerPoint flyer prints with wide white bands | It used the Letter Paper option, which is 10 x 7.5 inches | Set a custom 8.5 x 11 inch portrait slide |
| Your EPS logo won't insert | Office no longer lets you insert EPS files | Use a PNG or JPG version of the logo |
| Fonts look different at the print shop | The shop's computer doesn't have your font | Send a PDF instead of the Word or PowerPoint file |
| The printed photo looks soft | A small image was stretched to fill the page | Use an image of about 300 pixels per inch of print width |
Design it in Flyer Maker, finish it in Word
If laying out a template is eating your evening, Toybox AI's Flyer Maker designs the whole flyer from a description, and Word adds what an image can't hold: real tear-off tabs and a code that scans. Flyer Maker doesn't draw QR codes. Its "Leave a blank square for your QR code" switch saves a spot for the real one.
- Write the flyer out in "Describe your flyer": the service or event, when it runs, where, what it costs, and how to book. Include the phone number here too, so it's on the flyer as well as on the tabs you'll add in Word. Anything left out may come back as invented filler.
- Choose Tall ("Printing") under "Size", then open "More options" and set "Quality" to 4K. Switch on "Leave a blank square for your QR code" if you have one.
- Tap "Create flyer", proofread every word and number, and download the PNG. A wrong price or time can go into "Want to change something?" under the flyer (currently 60 credits, 70 for 2K, 90 for 4K).
- In Word, set half-inch margins under Layout, then Margins. The 7.5 x 10 inch area left on a letter page is exactly 3:4, the same shape as the Tall flyer.
- Insert the flyer with Insert, then Pictures, then This Device. At 7.5 inches wide it fills the area at about 330 pixels per inch. For tear-off tabs, size it to 6 x 8 inches and build the tab table in the 2 inches left below it.
- Add the QR code. Insert your QR image the same way, click Layout Options, pick any layout except In Line with Text, and drag it onto the blank square. Scan it with a phone before printing.
- Save a PDF with File, then Save a Copy, and print one test copy.
The words inside the flyer image aren't editable in Word, so fix them in Flyer Maker before you insert it. A description ready for this route:
