An AI Santa photo adds Santa Claus to a picture you took yourself: Santa kneeling by your own tree, sitting between your kids on the couch, or scratching your dog behind the ears. Tips for a believable Santa photo
Photograph the room first, the way Santa would find it. Tree lights on, room lights off, flash off, and the phone braced against a door frame so the shot is sharp. With the tree as the only light, there is one light source to name in the prompt and one for Santa to match.
Describe his light, gaze and hands. The prompting guide for OpenAI's GPT Image 2.5, the model Smart Editor runs on, says that when you put a person into a scene you should spell out the lighting, framing, gaze and what the person is doing. So name his light source ("lit only by the tree lights on his left"), where he looks ("down at the gift"), and what his hands hold.
Give Santa a job. Placing a gift, reading to the kids or eating a cookie puts his hands somewhere specific, and hands are the part you'll check most closely. "Holding the gift with both hands at the base of the tree" is easier to check than "standing in the room".
Keep him small or turned away in caught shots. In an AI Christmas photo with Santa caught in the act, a Santa seen from behind at the edge of the frame has fewer details to check than a close-up of his face.
Give him a size. OpenAI's guide lists relative scale among the things to describe. Compare him to something in your photo: "kneeling, his hat reaches the middle of the tree".
Keep kids' photos off public links. Anyone with a Toybox share link can open it. For a picture of your children, download the PNG and send it to family directly.
Limits to know
- Smart Editor is Pro-only. On the Free plan, use Room Guest with "Describe it" for Santa in your real room, or Image Generator for a scene that doesn't need your room.
- Room Guest adds one subject per run. In "Describe it" mode, write where Santa goes inside the description itself, and add a reindeer or a second figure in another run on the result.
- Smart Editor repaints the entire picture on each edit. You can't paint over one spot, so a child's face, the rug's pattern or an ornament may come back slightly different. Hold the result next to your original photo, and if a face moved, go back to "Original photo" under "Editing" and describe a smaller change.
- Hands and props need a close look. Check Santa's gloves, the gift in his hands, the edge of his beard and where his boots touch the floor. If one part is off, run a second edit on the newest version that names only that part.
- Image Generator doesn't promise a likeness. Its reference photos guide the picture, but a child's face may not match. When your kids must look like themselves, start from your real photo in Smart Editor or Room Guest, and still compare faces.
