Take a plain group photo on purpose. Set the phone on a shelf, use the self-timer, and stand everyone facing the camera in even window light, close enough that each face takes up a good part of the picture. Large, sharp faces are easier to compare with the result.
Name everyone in the keep line. "All five of us, including the baby and the dog" beats "keep our faces". Then count the people in the result.
Split the edit if a face shifts. The matching pajamas prompt changes clothes and setting at once. If someone looks different, go back to the original and do the setting first, then the pajamas on the latest result, so you know which change caused it.
Pick a scene lit like your photo. A group shot in bright shade suits a snowy field at midday. A lamp-lit living room photo suits the tree or the fireplace. Name the light in the prompt too, such as "soft daylight from the left on every face".
Write the baby's size into the prompt. "Keep the baby's face, cheeks and size exactly as in the photo" is more specific than "keep our faces". Do the same for each child by position, such as "the girl on the left".
Keep the untouched original. Leave it in your camera roll and compare every face against it before the picture goes on a card.
Sizes for framed prints and posts
At 300 pixels per inch, the highest column in Nations Photo Lab's resolution chart, an 8 x 10 in print for the grandparents' wall needs 2400 x 3000 pixels and a 5 x 7 in print needs 1500 x 2100 (inches x 300). Smart Editor's 4K setting covers both:

As of September 2026, Instagram keeps feed photos anywhere from 1.91:1 to 3:4 without cropping and scales anything wider than 1080 pixels down to 1080 wide, so both feed options post uncropped. Picking Social or Story makes Smart Editor redraw the picture in that shape, and the AI decides how to fit everyone in, so check that nobody at the edge got squeezed or cut off. Limits to know
- No Smart Editor without Pro. Free-plan accounts with credits can swap just the background in Background Swapper, or add a missing relative in Room Guest.
- Every face can drift. Smart Editor redraws the whole picture on each edit and has no way to protect one area, so faces, hands and sweater patterns can shift. The guide to keeping faces the same in AI edits has more ways to hold on to them.
- Smart Editor works on one photo at a time. It can't merge two pictures. Use Room Guest or Image Generator for relatives in separate photos.
- Image Generator's reference photos are only a guide. Toybox doesn't promise an exact likeness from them, which matters most for a card the grandparents will study. When likeness matters, start from a real group photo.
- Large groups mean more to check. With twelve cousins in one shot, keep the change small, such as a new background in Background Swapper, and check every face at full size.
How to make a family Christmas photo in Smart Editor
