A packaging mockup shows a box, bottle, jar, pouch or label the way a shopper will see it, on a shelf, a counter or a table. How you make one depends on what you have: a printed sample you can photograph, or only a flat design file from your designer. A packaging mockup generator that works from a photo only helps once the package exists. Until it's printed, a template route keeps the artwork exact.
What you can make with a packaging mockup
With a sample in hand, Product Mockup puts that same item into a scene of your choice and tries to keep its shape, colors and label. These are common packaging shots, each with notes to paste into "Anything else?".
Product mockup bottle scenes
Sauces, oils, drinks and cleaning products sell in bottles, and the shot should show the label and the liquid color. Pick Custom and type "on a rustic kitchen shelf", then add:

Boxes and cartons
A box needs more than its front. Google Merchant Center says a product shown in its packaging should display the package in more than one dimension, so show a corner. Product Mockup works from the box as photographed, so shoot your sample from a corner with both panels in view, then pick Custom and type "on a light gray paper sweep" and add:

Subscription boxes, gift sets and mailer boxes sell the opening moment. The scene can't open a closed box for you, so photograph the sample from above with the lid off and the contents arranged, then choose Flat lay and add:

Label close-ups are where an AI mockup is least reliable, because the label text is the detail buyers read. Use Product Mockup for the scene, and take your own straight-on photo of the label for the close-up. If you are testing a new label before ordering, print it on sticker paper at home, stick it on a blank jar or bottle, and photograph that as your sample. The product photography prompts library has more scenes, from store shelves to seasonal sets.
Packaging mockup design tips
- Photograph the real material. Matte paper, gloss laminate, kraft board and clear film reflect light differently. Product Mockup works from your sample photo, so shoot the actual printed stock, not a photo of the design on your screen.
- Shoot the faces you need. For a box, photograph the front, a three-quarter corner and the back panel, and run each photo as its own mockup.
- Show size once. Pick In hand for small packages, so buyers can see that a tin fits in a palm.
- Keep one scene per product line. Use the same Scene, Size and notes for every flavor or scent, swapping in each new product photo, so the range looks like a set.
- Leave room for text. For an ad, ask for a clear band of plain background above the package, then set the headline in whatever editor you use for ads.
Free packaging mockup downloads and templates
A packaging mockup free download is usually a PSD file with a smart object: a layer linked to a separate source image, so when you replace that source with your artwork, the package in the template's photo updates. You don't need to buy Photoshop to use one. Photopea, a free browser editor that works with PSD files, handles them this way:
- Open the PSD file in Photopea.
- Find the smart object layer, marked with a small sign on its thumbnail, and double-click the thumbnail. It opens as a separate document.
- Paste or place your label or box artwork, and resize it to fill that document.
- Choose File, then Save. Every layer linked to that smart object updates in the mockup.
- Save or export the finished mockup as an image for your listing.
For a free product label mockup without Photoshop files, Canva has packaging mockups under Elements, then Mockups, and a free Canva account allows 2,500 of them. Pacdora's free plan opens its 3D packaging templates, while exports without its watermark need a paid plan. Even its Pro plan (US$199 a year per seat) is licensed for personal use, so selling with those images means Business, at US$708 a year per seat. Check the license of every free PSD before it goes in a listing, because some are licensed for personal use only. Limits to know with packaging mockup AI
Scenes are the strong part of an AI packaging mockup, and fine print is the weak part. These limits matter most:
- No wrapping a flat design onto a blank. Product Mockup expects a photo of a real product; it won't wrap artwork around a blank box or jar. A label file uploaded there is treated as the product itself, a flat printed item.
- The design-file route is a concept. Image Generator can take your label as one of up to 3 "Reference photos" with a description such as "this label wrapped around a 250 ml amber glass jar with a black lid, on a light wood shelf". Lettering and layout on the jar can come out different from your file, so use it for pitches and mood boards, not listings. Its "Enhanced quality" switch ("Sharper text and logos", 45 more credits) is meant for images with words.
- Small print can change. Nutrition panels, ingredient lists, net weights and barcodes can come back garbled. Keep your own photo of the back panel in the listing.
- Not a print proof. An AI image is a picture of the package, not a file a printer can use. Check the dieline and artwork with your printer and get a proof before a run.
- No transparent cutouts. Every Toybox result comes back as a full picture with a background, so there's no transparent PNG to drop onto another design.
- Marketplace main images. Amazon's main image rules say not to include packaging unless it is an important product feature, such as a carrying case or a gift basket, so a packaging scene usually belongs in the additional images.
How to make a packaging mockup in Product Mockup
Have a photo of the printed package ready (JPG or PNG, 10 MB at most) against a plain background.
- Shoot the sample by a window on white or light gray paper, label toward the lens. For a box, take the front and a corner as two separate photos.
- Go to Product Mockup, sign in, and upload it in the "Product photo" box.
- Pick a Scene. Studio, Store shelf, Flat lay and In hand suit packaging, or type your own setting under Custom (180 characters at most).
- In "More options", set a Size and use "Anything else?" (500 characters) for the props, angle and lighting you want.
- Select "Create mockup". Results usually take about 30 seconds.
- Compare the label, the lid and every printed word against the sample. Pro plans can type a correction into "Want to change something?" (currently 85 credits); on other plans, edit your notes and run it once more.
- Keep the result by saving it to your gallery or downloading the PNG. Unsaved results stay available for 24 hours.
