These AI product photography prompts turn one plain photo of your product into studio, lifestyle, flat lay, in-hand, on-model and seasonal shots. Each one is written for the "Anything else?" box in Toybox AI's Product Mockup and comes with the Scene to pick, so you upload the product photo, choose the Scene and paste the notes. They also work as starting points in ChatGPT, Gemini and other image tools, with results that vary by model. Every prompt needs a photo of your real product. For rings, necklaces and earrings, the jewelry product photography guide has its own prompts.
How a good AI product photography prompt is built
A product prompt describes everything around the product and nothing about changing it. It has six parts:
- Surface or setting: what the product stands on and where, such as "a light oak kitchen counter".
- Grounding: how it sits ("stands upright", "lies flat"), so it doesn't look like it floats.
- Props: one to three items, smaller than the product and placed behind or around it.
- Light: direction and softness ("soft window light from the left").
- Camera: angle and framing ("eye level, product in the center third").
- Space: room for a headline or price, if the image is for an ad.
Add the product's real size when props could throw off the scale. A product mockup generator prompt built this way stays short enough for a 500-character notes box. Fill in the brackets:
The product [stands upright / lies flat] on [surface], front facing the camera. Behind it: [one or two props], smaller than the product. [Light direction and softness]. Camera at [angle], product in [part of the frame]. The product is about [size] tall. Leave [top third / left side] empty for text.Studio and backdrop prompts
Studio prompts give clean images for listings, catalogs and marketplace second photos. For scene ideas beyond plain backdrops, see the product photo background ideas.
White paper sweep
A plain white backdrop for a clean catalog shot. Scene: Studio.
Plain white seamless paper backdrop that curves up behind the product. The product sits centered and fills most of the frame, front facing the camera. Soft, even light from both sides, with a faint contact shadow under the base. Camera straight on at product height.Change: swap "straight on" for "a three-quarter view from the left" for a second angle.
Solid color backdrop
A single brand color behind and under the product, for social posts and collection pages. Scene: Custom, "on a solid terracotta paper backdrop".
The product stands on solid terracotta paper that curves up behind it. Hard light from the upper right casts one crisp shadow to the lower left. Nothing else in the frame. Camera slightly above product height, product centered with equal space on both sides.Change: the backdrop color, and "hard light" to "soft light" for a gentler look.
Stone plinth
A gallery-style display for premium products. Scene: Custom, "on a round travertine plinth against a sand-colored wall".
The product stands on a round travertine plinth, front facing the camera. A second, lower plinth beside it stays empty. Warm, soft light from the left throws a long, gentle shadow across the wall. Eye-level camera, the product in the upper middle of the frame.Change: travertine to white plaster or dark green marble.
Dark reflective surface
A moody, high-contrast look for evening ads and launches. Scene: Custom, "on black glossy acrylic with a charcoal background".
The product stands upright on black glossy acrylic, with a faint reflection beneath it. A narrow strip light behind the product outlines its edges, and a soft light from the front keeps the label readable. Camera at product height, product centered, plenty of dark space around it.Change: add "a thin line of warm gold light along the back edge" for a gift-season version.
Lifestyle prompts
Lifestyle prompts show the product where someone would use it. Serums, creams and hair products get their own marble-counter and shower-shelf notes on the skincare product mockup page.
Morning kitchen counter
For kitchenware, food products, bottles and cleaning products. Scene: Custom, "on a light oak kitchen counter next to a window".
Morning sun from the window on the right, soft shadows falling left. A small bowl of lemons and a folded linen tea towel behind the product, slightly out of focus. The product stands near the front edge of a light oak counter, front facing the camera. Eye-level camera, three-quarter view.Change: lemons to fresh herbs in a jar, or morning sun to warm evening lamp light.
Tidy desk
For stationery, tech accessories, mugs and planners. Scene: Workspace.
On a white desk beside a closed laptop, a notebook and a small potted plant, all behind the product. The product sits on the desk in the front third of the frame. Cool daylight from a window on the left. Camera a little above the desk, looking down at about 30 degrees.Change: the white desk to dark walnut for a warmer, evening feel.
Park picnic
For drinks, snacks, sunscreen, books and outdoor gear. Scene: Outdoors.
On a folded cream blanket on short grass in a park. Late afternoon sun from behind the product puts a warm rim of light on its edges. A wicker basket and a paperback book sit blurred in the background. The product sits upright on the blanket, front facing the camera. Low camera angle near the ground.Change: the park to a sandy lakeshore, or the blanket color to match your packaging.
Cafe table
For coffee, pastries, phone accessories and small gifts. Scene: Custom, "on a small round marble cafe table outdoors".
Soft overcast daylight with no direct sun. A cup of coffee and a folded paper napkin behind the product, out of focus. The product stands at the front edge of a small round marble table, front facing the camera. Camera at table height, shallow focus, so the street behind turns into a soft blur.Change: the coffee to a glass of iced tea for a summer version.
Flat lay, in-hand and on-model prompts
These prompts match three of Product Mockup's ready scenes. They suit products that people carry, wear or unpack.
Flat lay with props
A top-down layout for Instagram and Pinterest. Scene: Flat lay.
The product lies in the center of a pale gray linen surface, front facing up. Around it, evenly spaced: a pair of sunglasses, a folded paper map and a set of keys, each smaller than the product. Soft daylight from above with gentle shadows. Straight top-down camera with space around every item.Change: the props to fit the buyer, such as a passport and a boarding pass for travel products.
What's in the box
A neat grid of everything the buyer receives, useful as an additional listing image. Scene: Flat lay.
The product lies in the center of a plain white surface. Each part that comes with it is laid out around it in a neat grid, all parallel and evenly spaced. Soft, even light from above with very faint shadows. Straight top-down camera, square framing, a small margin around the outer items.Change: the surface color. Lay out every included part in the photo you upload, so the grid shows what the buyer actually gets.
Held in hand
Shows real size, which buyers check on small items. Scene: In hand.
A hand holds the product at chest height, fingers below the front so the name and label stay visible. Plain light gray wall behind, soft window light from the left, shallow depth of field. Short natural nails, no rings. Camera straight on, the product filling the middle third of the frame.Change: the wall color, or "chest height" to "held out toward the camera" for a closer shot.
On a model
For bags, hats, scarves and anything worn or carried. Scene: On a model.
A person in a plain white T-shirt wears or holds the product, shown from the chest up, face turned slightly away from the camera. Clean light gray studio backdrop, soft light from the front left. The product is sharp and in the center of the frame, and the person is a supporting detail.Change: the T-shirt color to one that contrasts with the product.
Shop shelf
A retail preview for wholesale pitches and launch posts. Scene: Store shelf.
The product stands at eye level on a light wooden shelf in a small independent shop, front facing out. Plain unlabeled jars and folded towels sit on the shelves around it. Warm overhead shop lights, the rest of the store softly blurred. Camera straight on at shelf height.Change: the props to items from your category, all unbranded.
Seasonal and ad prompts
Seasonal prompts refresh the same product for sales and holidays. Each one leaves room for a headline you add later in your own design app.
Autumn table
Scene: Custom, "on a rustic wooden table with fall leaves".
Scattered orange and red maple leaves and two small pumpkins behind the product. Warm late-afternoon light from the left with soft shadows. The product stands upright at the front of a rustic wooden table, facing the camera. Eye-level camera, warm color tone. Empty space across the top third for a sale headline.Change: pumpkins to pinecones and cinnamon sticks for late November.
Winter holiday lights
Scene: Custom, "on a white table with pine branches and string lights".
Pine branches and a few small gift boxes wrapped in plain kraft paper behind the product. The string lights are blurred into soft warm dots. The product stands in front on a white table, lit by soft light from the front. Eye-level camera, deep blue evening tones in the background, empty space on the left side.Change: kraft paper to red paper with white twine.
Summer beach
Scene: Custom, "on warm sand at the beach".
The product stands upright on smooth sand, with a folded striped towel and a seashell behind it. Bright midday sun from the upper right casts a short, crisp shadow. A turquoise sea is softly blurred in the background. Camera low, close to sand level, product in the left third of the frame.Change: midday sun to golden hour for warmer light and longer shadows.
Water splash
A high-energy ad image for drinks and bottles. Scene: Custom, "in a clear water splash against a pale blue background".
Frozen droplets and a ring of water rise around the base of the product, while the front of the product stays dry and faces the camera. Crisp, bright studio flash, with a pale blue gradient behind. Camera at product height, product centered, droplets sharp.Change: water to falling fruit slices, such as orange and lime, for a juice or soda.
Using a product mockup prompt in ChatGPT, Gemini or Shopify
Each prompt on this page works as a product mockup prompt in ChatGPT or Gemini once you add one line saying what must not change. Google's prompting guide for its image models recommends being explicit about what to keep when you edit a picture. Upload your product photo, then start the prompt with: "Use the product in my photo exactly as it is: same shape, colors and label text." Then paste the scene notes.
- ChatGPT: OpenAI lists ChatGPT Images on every ChatGPT tier, and it can edit an image you upload. Pick the shape with the aspect ratio picker or name it in the prompt. When you edit one area with the selection tool, OpenAI notes that highlights aren't always precise, so check the label afterward.
- Gemini: In the Gemini app, image requests use Nano Banana 2 when the Gemini model is Flash or Pro, according to Google's help page. Editing uploaded images requires you to be 18 or older, and downloads are 1K without a paid Google AI plan and 2K with one. Google's prompting guide suggests stating the reference, how to use it, and the new scene, which is the same order as the extra line above.
- Shopify's Generate box: Shopify says the prompt box in its file editor isn't conversational, and it suggests at least 3 to 7 words written as short phrases separated by commas. Cut a prompt here down to its surface, light and one prop, such as "light oak counter, morning window light, bowl of lemons behind".
Product Mockup already aims to keep your product's shape, colors and label, so there the scene notes alone are enough. For prompts that make whole images from text, browse the AI image prompts library.
Tips for better AI product photography results
- Say what belongs in the scene. Google's Nano Banana guide recommends positive framing: ask for "an empty street" rather than "no cars". Write "plain light gray wall" rather than "no clutter".
- Name the light like a photographer. For even light on a product, the same guide suggests naming the setup, for example "three-point softbox setup"; for long shadows, "golden hour backlighting".
- Name the surface and the material. Google's guide advises describing materials precisely. "Light oak counter" or "black glossy acrylic" gives a clearer scene than "a nice table".
- State the size and how it sits. Shopify's help page for its own AI image editor suggests giving the item's size (its example is a 26 x 18 inch suitcase) and how it rests (boots on the floor against a wall), so the scene is scaled to the product and nothing floats.
- Change one thing per run. Keep the notes that worked and edit one line, such as the light or one prop, so you can tell what changed.
- Keep the same notes across a product line. Use one prompt for every color or scent in a collection, and only swap the product photo.
Fixes for common problems
| Problem | Add this to your prompt |
|---|---|
| The product seems to float above the surface | "The product rests directly on the [surface], with a soft contact shadow under its base." |
| Props look as big as the product | "All props are smaller than the product and sit behind it." |
| The product is too small in the frame | "The product fills most of the frame, centered." |
| Props are the wrong scale | "The product is about [15 cm] tall, and the props are at real size next to it." |
| Glare hides the label | "Soft, diffused light from a large window, with gentle highlights on the edges only." |
| The scene is too busy | "Only one prop, placed behind the product and out of focus." |
| The background looks flat | "Shallow depth of field, background softly blurred." |
| No room for your headline | "Empty space across the top third of the frame." |
The label is the one thing no prompt can promise. Zoom in on small text, batch codes and ingredient lists before you use any result. For the full workflow, from photographing the product to marketplace rules, read the AI product photography guide.
Run these prompts in Product Mockup
"Try this prompt" under any block opens Product Mockup with those notes already typed into "Anything else?". You still upload a JPG or PNG of the product (up to 10 MB) and pick the Scene named above the prompt, typing the Custom line where there is one. Set the Size in "More options", such as Portrait (4:5) for feeds or Story (9:16) for Reels. Each run makes one image for 75 credits at current prices, and on a Pro plan a follow-up fix typed into "Want to change something?" costs 85. How your uploads are handled is in the privacy policy.
