Why sellers look for a Placeit mockup alternative
Most of the reasons are written on Placeit's own pricing and license pages. One more comes from how template mockups work.
- The main plan is a subscription. Placeit sells items one at a time, but its headline offer is the Unlimited Subscription at $14.95 a month or $89.69 a year, with a one-month minimum once you've downloaded any template. A seller who needs six mockups a year may pay less with credits or a free supplier generator.
- Personalized products. Placeit's license rules out an online service where end users personalize a Placeit design and print it on their own products. It also rules out offering its templates on an "on demand", "made to order" or "build it yourself" basis. A shop built on buyer personalization should read that clause before listing anything.
- Shared templates. The license calls its templates non-exclusive, so another shop can use the same model photo with a different design on it.
- Handmade goods. A template shows a generic shirt, mug or candle jar with your artwork on it, not the hand-poured candle, soap or ceramic bowl you made. Those need a photo of your own item in a scene, which is the job AI scene tools do.
- Your supplier already has one. Placeit says it isn't a print-on-demand site, so a POD shop needs a supplier anyway, and Printful and Printify both include free mockups for the products they print.

Canva Mockups (formerly Smartmockups) lives inside the Canva editor: open a design, go to Elements, then Mockups, and drag your image onto a print, packaging, apparel or device template. Canva can also turn your own brand photo into a template, with AI finding surfaces to place your design on. Canva Free covers up to 2,500 mockup uses; past that, you need Canva Pro. As of September 2026, Pro is US$144 per year for one person, and Business is US$250 per person per year. Magic Eraser, Background Remover and Magic Expand are marked Pro. Downloads come as JPG, PNG, PDF or SVG. Canva fits a seller who already makes listings, labels and social posts in Canva and wants mockups in the same place.
Mockey
Mockey is a template mockup site with a layer of AI tools. The free plan includes more than 1,000 mockups as JPG downloads, capped at 3 a day and marked for personal use. Paid plans start with Starter at US$5.70 a month billed yearly (US$68), which adds commercial use, PNG files and 600 AI credits a year. Creator is US$12.40 a month billed yearly (US$149) with 1,800 AI credits a year, and Forever is a one-time US$199 with 1,000 AI credits. The Creator and Forever cards add video mockups and AI tools such as AI Change Background. An AI Change Background or AI Photoshoot edit costs 2 credits, and a 5-second video mockup costs 10. It fits a seller who wants template mockups with commercial use at a low yearly price.
Printful and Printify mockup generators
Both print-on-demand suppliers include mockup generators for the products they make. Printful's generator is free and covers each product it sells with ready mockup templates: you sign up, create a product template, add your design, and download mockups with lifestyle or clean studio backgrounds. Printify offers watermark-free mockups for more than 2,000 catalog products, downloaded as PNG. Its AI scene generator, where you describe a setting such as a sunlit cafe, is a Premium feature: from US$39 a month, or from US$24.99 a month billed yearly. The limit is scope, since each generator only covers its own catalog. For a shirt shop run on one of them, this is the first place to look, and the t-shirt mockup page covers front, back and on-model shots.
Pacdora for packaging
Pacdora is built for packaging: 5,000+ mockups plus dieline templates, the flat die-cut layouts that boxes are printed from, with 3D previews of your artwork on them. Pro is US$17 per seat per month, billed US$199 a year, and is for personal use only. Business, at US$59 per seat per month billed US$708 a year, adds commercial use and a resale license, 8K image exports and more AI credits. Pacdora lists watermark-free exports as a feature of its paid plans, not the free one. It fits a brand checking box art before a print run, which the packaging mockup page covers in more detail.
Toybox Product Mockup
Product Mockup takes one photo of a real product ("PNG or JPG. A plain background works best.") and puts that item into a scene: Studio, Workspace, In hand, On a model, Store shelf, Outdoors, Flat lay, or a Custom scene you describe in up to 180 characters. It aims to keep the product's shape, colors and label, and your notes on props, angle and light go in "Anything else?". Each run makes one image, currently 75 credits (about 75 cents at top-up prices), on the Free plan. A design file you upload is treated as a flat printed item, not wrapped onto a shirt or mug. For a design on a shirt, Toybox's Image Generator (currently 50 credits) can take the design as a reference photo ("this design printed on a heather gray t-shirt"), though the print can drift from your file. It fits handmade and physical goods that need scenes no template has.

Start from what you have in your hands and where the order gets printed.
- A print-on-demand shirt shop with 40 designs on one blank. Use your supplier's free generator (Printful or Printify), or Placeit if you sell through several suppliers and want one library, which Placeit calls the world's largest. - Handmade candles, soap or pottery for Etsy. Photograph each item on a plain background and use Toybox Product Mockup for scene shots. The Etsy mockups guide covers listing order and sizes.
- You already pay for Canva Pro. Use Canva Mockups. Your brand kit, fonts and listing graphics are already there.
- Packaging before a print run. Use Pacdora, and budget for Business if the images will be used commercially.
- A dozen mockups a year on a small budget. For designs on templates, Canva Free covers up to 2,500 mockup uses, and Mockey's Starter plan (US$68 a year) is the low-cost option with commercial use. Product Mockup is built for the case no template covers: you have a physical product and no design file.
- Photograph your item against plain paper by a window, front toward the camera, and save a JPG or PNG under 10 MB.
- Open Product Mockup, sign in with a free account, and add the picture under "Product photo".
- Choose a Scene, or pick Custom and write one, such as "on a potting bench in a sunny greenhouse".
- In "More options", set the Size and describe props and light in "Anything else?".
- Tap "Create mockup" and give it about 30 seconds.
