The Etsy mockup size that works everywhere on the site has a short side of 2000 pixels or more, in a landscape or square shape. Etsy doesn't require one aspect ratio, so the exact pixel count depends on the shape you pick. Below are Etsy's own numbers for listing photos and videos, the pixel sizes for five common shapes, what the thumbnail crop cuts away, and the export settings that let a file upload on the first try.

The 2000 px figure is a recommendation, not a hard rule. When a photo is narrower, the listing form shows the message "Listings look best with photos at least 2000 pixels wide". Etsy calls it a suggestion, and you can still publish, but the wider file gives buyers a sharper image.
Etsy mockup dimensions for each shape
To keep both sides at 2000 px or more, set the short side to 2000 px and multiply for the long side: long side = 2000 x (long ratio number / short ratio number). A 3:2 mockup is 2000 x 3 / 2 = 3000 px wide.

Bigger files are fine, as long as the file size stays manageable (see the upload settings below). Etsy compresses uploads and sizes images for mobile displays either way. Never enlarge a small image to reach 2000 px: Etsy notes that shrinking an image keeps its resolution, while enlarging it can cause pixelation.
How Etsy crops the first mockup
Etsy shows the first listing photo as a cropped thumbnail in three shapes, square, portrait and landscape, in different places across the site. The product has to read clearly in all three. Etsy's advice is to shoot from farther back than feels necessary, keep the key part of the item centered, and check the result with the thumbnail adjustment tool in the listing editor.
Here is what a centered square crop does to a 3000 x 2000 px mockup: it keeps the middle 2000 x 2000 px and drops 500 px from each side, one sixth of the width on the left and one sixth on the right. Anything in those strips, like a second product, a price card or a line of text, is gone from the square thumbnail.
- Keep the product inside the center square. On a 3:2 mockup, that means the middle 2000 px of the 3000 px width.
- Leave margin on every side. A portrait crop cuts the sides of a landscape photo even harder than the square one, so keep the product's ends well away from the left and right edges, with a little space at the top and bottom too.
- Preview before you publish. Etsy's listing form shows thumbnail previews before the listing goes live.
- Skip collages for the first photo. Etsy says a first photo that's too dark, blurry or a collage of several shots may rank lower in search.
- Move text to later photos. Size charts, "digital download" notes and personalization examples shrink to nothing in a thumbnail. Describe them in the image's alt text as well, for search and screen readers.
Etsy's editor has its own crop tool with suggested sizes (hover over a photo and choose the crop icon). Once you save a crop you can't undo it, so the only way back is to upload the original again. Crop in your own editor and keep the full-size file.
Why the first photo sets the shape of the rest
Etsy says the first listing photo dictates the shape of the ones after it, and recommends one shape for the whole set. If the first mockup is 3:2, crop the detail shot, the scale shot and every lifestyle mockup to 3:2 as well. A set made from different template packs often needs this step, because each pack comes in its own shape.
The first photo also has content rules. For personalized items, Etsy's Listing Image Requirements say the first image has to be a finished, personalized example, not a blank item and not a mockup with filler text like "Your Text Here". Computer-generated mockups can go in the later photos. Etsy mockup image size, format and color for uploads
A mockup at the right pixel size can still fail at upload. Three settings cause most of the trouble.
- File size. Etsy's image guide warns that files over 1 MB can stall before they finish uploading, most often on a slow connection, and the troubleshooting part of its How to Create a Listing page sets the risk lower, at files over 300 KB. PNG is a lossless format, so a photo saved as PNG is usually much heavier than the same photo saved as JPG. Export a JPG copy of large mockups.
- Transparency. Etsy doesn't support transparent PNGs. Transparent areas appear black, so a template mockup exported with a see-through background gets black corners. Flatten it onto white or a color first.
- Color profile. Etsy converts every image to sRGB. If colors shift after upload, convert the file to sRGB in your editor before uploading. CMYK is for print files, not listing photos.
Etsy accepts HEIC files. Many editing tools, including the photo tools in Toybox AI, only take JPG or PNG, so export a JPG copy before you edit.
Etsy video mockup size
Etsy listing videos follow their own numbers. As of September 2026, a listing holds 2 videos at most, and each one can run up to 15 seconds and 100 MB, as MP4, MOV or another common format. The sound is dropped once the video is on the listing. Etsy's floor is 500 px, and its ideal is 1080 px or more.
An 8-second clip made from a mockup, such as a slow push toward a framed print, fits the length limit. In Toybox, Video Creator (Pro plan) makes 720p clips of 4, 6 or 8 seconds starting from your photo, which clears Etsy's minimum but not its 1080 px ideal. Video Creator Lite, also on Pro, offers 1080p, and its 1080p clips are always 8 seconds.
How to make a mockup at the right size
Check the pixel size first. Etsy notes that a photo's details view on a phone or computer usually lists its pixel dimensions. Then crop every photo in the set to one shape, 3:2 or 1:1 for the first photo, and export at 2000 px or more on the short side, as JPG, in sRGB.
To build a new scene around a photo of your product instead:
- Sign in to Product Mockup; it needs a free account.
- Add a photo of the real item as the "Product photo". JPG and PNG files up to 10 MB work, and a plain background gives the cleanest result.
- Under "Scene", choose Flat lay ("Shot from above") or Workspace ("On a tidy desk").
- In "More options", set "Size" to Landscape (3:2) for a first photo, or Square (1:1) for a round or compact item, and type "leave empty space around the item" in "Anything else?" so the thumbnail crops have room.
- Press "Create mockup". The wait is usually about 30 seconds.
- Open the downloaded PNG's details. Product Mockup has no pixel-size setting, so confirm the short side is 2000 px or more.
- Hold the result up against the real item. The tool tries to hold your product's shape, colors and label, but small lettering and color still need a look. Then save a JPG copy to upload.
If the download comes back smaller than 2000 px on the short side, don't stretch it. Smart Editor (Pro plan) has a 4K setting that returns known sizes, such as 2880 x 2880 px for Square, but it redraws the whole image, so compare every detail again afterward. Other Etsy shop image sizes
A shop needs a few images besides listing mockups, and each has its own number. As of September 2026, Etsy's image guide lists these:

Shopify and Amazon use different numbers for the same product photos. Shopify says a 2048 x 2048 px square usually displays best (Shopify product photo sizes), and Amazon wants a pure white main image, with zoom from 1,000 px on the longest side (Amazon product photo rules). A 3000 x 2000 px master gives a 2000 x 2000 px square crop, enough for Amazon's zoom and a little under Shopify's 2048 px figure.
