Etsy mockups for digital products have a job that photos of physical goods don't: showing a buyer something they'll never hold. A planner, a printable or an SVG cut file is a download, so the mockup shows it on a tablet, in a frame, or cut in vinyl on a mug. You can make one three ways, and they differ in how closely the picture matches your file. Below are Etsy's rules for digital listings, the three routes, and steps for the three most common digital products.
What Etsy's rules say about digital product images
Etsy's Creativity Standards put digital downloads under "designed by a seller": your own graphics, audio, documents or scans of your artwork, sold as a file. A bundle or PDF of work you didn't create doesn't qualify, and neither do AI prompt bundles. Designs you generate with AI tools from your own prompts are allowed, but you must disclose the AI use in the listing description.
The image rule is strict. Etsy's Listing Image Requirements ask for original photos of the real item a buyer gets, and they name only two cases where a mockup or stock photo can stand in: designs a production partner prints on a base product, and the photos after the first one on personalized items. Digital downloads aren't mentioned either way, so the careful approach is to build every mockup from your real file and to include flat previews of the actual pages.
Four details from Etsy's digital listing rules shape the photos too:
- Up to 5 files per listing, each up to 20 MB. Show what's inside, like "1 PDF, 12 monthly pages, 2 cover options".
- Buyers see your file names. Names are limited to 70 characters, so "Weekly-Planner-Letter-Size.pdf" beats "final_v3.pdf".
- No variations on digital listings. If you sell letter and A4 versions, include both files in one listing and show both in a photo.
- SVG isn't on Etsy's list of file types. ZIP, PDF, PNG and JPG are, so cut files go inside a ZIP.
As of September 2026, Etsy is also testing an option that lets buyers of eligible digital items order a physical print, made and shipped by an outside print-on-demand company through a separate checkout. Eligible sellers are included automatically, you don't produce or ship anything, and you can opt out anytime.
3 ways to make Etsy mockups for digital products
Each route trades speed against accuracy. As of September 2026:
| Route | How close to your file | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mockup template | Your exact file, placed on a ready-made photo | Canva's free plan includes 2,500 mockups; paid packs vary | Planners on devices, frames, mugs, shirts |
| Photograph the real thing | Exact: the printed piece or your own screen | Paper, ink and a frame you may already own | Printables, cards, stickers, finished SVG projects |
| AI scene | The scene is new; a flat design may be redrawn | Toybox AI: Image Generator currently 50 credits, Product Mockup 75 | Extra lifestyle variety after the accurate shots |
Digital product mockup templates
A digital product mockup template is a photo with a marked area where your design drops in, like the screen of a tablet or the inside of a frame. Canva Mockups works this way, with templates you open from Elements, then Mockups, in any Canva design; the full steps are in how to make mockups for Etsy. Canva says Mockups images are fine for personal and commercial projects but can't be resold or handed out as a mockup set.
Paid Etsy mockup templates, sold one at a time or in bundles for Photoshop or Canva, work the same way. Before you buy one, check three things: that the license covers product listings, that the scene fits your file's shape (a 4:5 frame for 8 x 10 prints, a portrait screen for planners), and that the files are large enough for Etsy's 2000 px guideline. Export your design at full resolution before placing it, because a small design stretched into a large frame looks soft.
Planner mockups on a tablet
For a digital planner, the most honest photo is the real thing: open the PDF in a note-taking app on your own tablet, set it on a desk, and photograph it. Turn the screen brightness up, and angle the tablet away from the window so the glass doesn't reflect it. Then take screenshots of 3 or 4 real pages for flat previews, since buyers want to read the page layout at full size.
A template gives you a cleaner device shot if you don't own a tablet: pick a device mockup and drop in a screenshot of your cover page. For extra scenes, Image Generator in Toybox takes up to 3 "Reference photos" and, in its own words, uses them "to guide the style, subject or layout". A description such as "Show this planner page on the screen of a tablet lying on a white oak desk beside a stylus and a coffee cup, top-down view, soft daylight" can work as a mood image. The AI redraws the page, so small text and lines may not match your file. Use that image for atmosphere, and let the screenshots show the real layout.
Printable wall art in a frame
Buyers print wall art to fit a frame they already own, so the mockup and the listing both need to show the ratios you include. Pixel sizes for a 300 DPI print are inches x 300:
| Print ratio | Common sizes (inches) | File at 300 DPI for the largest size |
|---|---|---|
| 2:3 | 4 x 6, 8 x 12, 12 x 18, 24 x 36 | 7200 x 10800 px |
| 3:4 | 6 x 8, 9 x 12, 12 x 16, 18 x 24 | 5400 x 7200 px |
| 4:5 | 4 x 5, 8 x 10, 16 x 20 | 4800 x 6000 px |
| 11:14 | 11 x 14 | 3300 x 4200 px |
Four ratio files fit Etsy's 5-file limit with one slot to spare. A 7200 x 10800 px file can pass Etsy's 20 MB cap per file, so check each file's size after you export it, and save the largest as a high-quality JPG or PDF if it's over. Say which ratios are included in a later listing photo, not the first one.
The most faithful frame mockup is a real one. Print the file at home, put it in a frame, and photograph it straight on in daylight, with the camera at the center of the frame so the edges stay square. That photo of a physical, framed print can then go into Product Mockup as the product, with a scene around it. Choose the Custom scene or Workspace, and add notes like these in "Anything else?":
Hang the framed print on a warm white wall above a low walnut sideboard with a small ceramic vase, soft daylight from a window on the right, straight-on view at eye level. Leave the artwork inside the frame untouched.Lean the framed print against the wall on a light wooden shelf next to a trailing green plant and two stacked books, morning light, slightly angled view from the left. Do not change the artwork, the mat or the frame color. If the frame already hangs on your own wall, Smart Editor (Pro plan) can change the room from one photo, with an instruction like "paint the wall a soft sage green and add a brass floor lamp on the right; keep the print inside the frame exactly the same". Every Smart Editor edit redraws the full picture, so check the artwork against your file afterward.
SVG files on mugs and shirts
An SVG buyer wants to know what the finished project looks like, which usually means vinyl on a mug, a tumbler or a shirt. The most convincing mockup is one project you make yourself: cut the design, apply it to a blank mug, and photograph it. That mug is now a physical product photo you can restage in new scenes:
Put the mug on a rustic wooden table with a knitted blanket and a small pumpkin in the background, warm afternoon light, the vinyl design facing the camera and centered, eye-level view.Without a finished project, a template is the accurate route, because it places your exact file on the mug or shirt. Export the SVG as a PNG first, since Canva's Mockups upload takes JPG, PNG or PDF. Two AI shortcuts have limits worth knowing. Product Mockup won't wrap artwork around a blank product: an uploaded design is handled as a flat printed item, not put on a mug. Image Generator accepts the design as a reference photo, with a description like "this design printed in black vinyl on a white ceramic mug", but the print may not match your file exactly. Shirts get their own walkthrough in the t-shirt mockup guide, and printed products sold through a supplier are covered in print on demand mockups.
Tips for digital product mockups
- Show the real file next to the pretty one. Pair each styled mockup with a flat preview of the same page or design.
- Say "digital download" in a photo and in the title. A framed-print photo can look like a physical print for sale, so say it's a download where buyers will see it.
- List every file. "ZIP with SVG, PNG and DXF" or "5 PDFs: 2:3, 3:4, 4:5, 11:14 and A4" in a later image tells buyers what's in the download before they have to message you.
- Keep the design in the center square. Etsy trims the first photo to three thumbnail shapes, so anything near the edges can vanish.
- Flatten transparent previews. Etsy fills transparent pixels with black, so put SVG previews on a white background.
Troubleshooting digital product mockups
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Artwork inside the frame looks soft | A small export was stretched to fill the template | Export the design at full size before placing it |
| Black background behind an SVG preview | The preview PNG is transparent | Flatten it onto white before uploading |
| Glare hides the planner on a tablet | The screen faces a window | Turn the tablet away from the light and raise the brightness |
| The AI scene changed the artwork | The design was redrawn from a reference photo | Use a template or a photo of a real print for accuracy |
| The framed print looks tilted | The camera wasn't square to the frame | Shoot from the frame's center height, straight on |
| A print file won't attach | It's over Etsy's 20 MB limit per file | Save it as a high-quality JPG or PDF and check the size again |
Stage a printed copy in Product Mockup
Product Mockup keeps the item in your photo and builds a new scene around it, so it suits printed pieces: a framed print, a stack of printed cards, a finished mug.
- Photograph the printed piece flat or framed, straight on, next to a window.
- Load that photo into Product Mockup as the "Product photo".
- For wall art, choose Custom and describe the wall in up to 180 characters; for cards or a mug, Workspace works.
- Set the shape under "More options" to match your listing's first photo, and add one of the notes above in "Anything else?".
- Run "Create mockup", then lay the result next to your original file and compare the artwork line by line.
Each image is priced at 75 credits currently, above the 20-credit welcome balance on a new account. Fine lettering on a print deserves the closest look: Product Mockup tries to hold on to your product's colors and label, but it can't promise that small type survives.
