The trend is a side-by-side joke: the pet photo, then the person. USA Today reported in April 2025 that it appeared to begin with a Reddit post before moving to TikTok and X. Versions to try:

One way to pick the person's look is to read the breed's temperament into it. The American Kennel Club's breed pages describe each breed in a line or two, and a few of those words are enough to choose an outfit and a job:

Tips for better pet to human results
Map each feature on purpose. Coat color becomes hair color, eye color stays the eye color, floppy ears can become a wavy bob and upright ears a spiky cut, and markings can become freckles, a white streak or dark eyebrows. Write each one down, or the AI chooses for you.
Give an age range. "In his 20s" and "in her 70s" read very differently. A senior dog with a gray muzzle makes a good grandparent.
Ask to keep the scene. "Keep the couch, the lighting and the camera angle the same" makes the two pictures line up when you post them next to each other.
Change one thing per follow-up. Smart Editor runs on OpenAI's GPT Image 2.5. OpenAI's image prompting guide recommends asking for one change per edit and repeating the details you want preserved, because repeated edits can shift things you meant to keep.
Pick a photo where the whole pet shows. A full-body shot gives the AI a pose and a size to work from. A tight face crop leaves the rest of the person to guesswork.
Add a caption in your pet's voice
A line in the pet's own voice makes a good caption for a pet-as-person post. Limits to know
Smart Editor is a Pro plan tool. An edit is currently 85 credits in HD or 110 in 4K. On the Free plan, use Image Generator instead: add the pet photo under "Reference photos" and describe the person (currently 50 credits). Image Generator paints a new picture from the photo as a guide, so the couch, the pose and the light won't match your original exactly.
The face is invented every time. The person doesn't exist, so a second run can give you a different stranger. Keep editing the result you like instead of starting over.
The whole picture gets redrawn. There's no brush or mask, so a pillow or a plant can shift. Add "keep everything else the same" and compare the background with your photo.
Everything has to be in one photo. Smart Editor works on a single image, so it can't take your dog from one picture and your living room from another. Start from a photo that already shows the pet where you want the person. How to turn your pet into a person in Smart Editor
