These dog portrait prompts turn your pet's photo (a dog, a cat or any other animal) into a painted, studio or holiday portrait. They're written for Toybox AI's Image Generator: add the photo with "Add reference photos", then copy one of the prompts into "Describe your image" and change the coat and markings to match your pet. Every prompt needs that uploaded photo, because it's the only way the AI knows what your pet looks like, and the privacy policy explains what happens to it. You can run them in ChatGPT or Gemini too, though each model reads the same words its own way.
How a good dog portrait prompt is built
A dog portrait prompt has six parts, and the sixth, the keep line, is what ties the result to your own pet:
- Who. "The dog in my reference photo", plus the breed or mix and the coat color.
- Style. A medium and a period or a photo type: "oil on canvas, 1800s court portrait" or "studio photo on a gray backdrop".
- Outfit or props. One or two, described plainly: "a red velvet cape", "a striped party hat".
- Setting and light. Where it happens and where the light comes from: "dark background, window light from the left".
- Framing. Head and shoulders, three-quarter, or full body.
- Keep line. The markings, ear shape and eye color that must stay as they are in your photo.
Fill in the brackets in this template, then delete any part you don't need:

Tips for better dog portrait results
Describe the dog even though you uploaded a photo. Name the breed or mix, the coat colors and one or two markings. The words tell the AI which parts of the photo matter.
Say which photo is which. With two or three reference photos, write "the first reference photo" and "the second reference photo", and give each one a job: the face, the full coat, a second pet.
Keep the face visible. Hats, glasses and helmets can cover the features you want recognized. Add "face and both ears fully visible" to any prompt with a costume.
Put words in double quotes. A name on a banner or a plaque reads best when you give the exact text and switch on "Enhanced quality". Check every letter on the result.
Use real art and camera words. "Watercolor on cold-press paper", "charcoal on sketchbook paper" and "85mm lens, softbox" describe something the AI can draw. "Masterpiece" and "award-winning" don't. For more on prompt structure outside pet portraits, see the AI image prompts library.
