These AI background generator prompts swap in a new scene behind a photo you already have: a home office or a golden-hour beach for a portrait, a marble counter or linen cloth for a product. Every prompt fits the 240-character Custom scene box in Toybox AI's Background Swapper. You upload the photo first, and the prompt only describes what goes behind your subject. They also work as starting points in Gemini, ChatGPT and other image editors, where results vary by model and you add a line about what to keep.
How a good AI background generator prompt is built
A background prompt describes a place, not a person, because the person or product is already in your photo. Google's guide to prompting Gemini's image model says to describe the scene in full sentences rather than list keywords, and to think like a photographer about angle, lens and light. Five parts cover almost every background:
- The place. One specific setting: "a home office", "a rooftop terrace at dusk".
- One or two props. A bookshelf, a potted plant, a folded towel. More than two starts to compete with your subject.
- The light and its direction. OpenAI's ChatGPT guide recommends saying where light comes from rather than asking for "beautiful lighting". Match the side the light hits your face or product.
- Time of day or color of light. Golden hour, overcast, warm lamp light, cool blue dusk.
- Camera and focus. Eye level or slightly above, and how blurred the background should be.

Using these prompts in Gemini or ChatGPT
In a general AI editor, add a line that says what stays. Google's guide suggests naming the one element to change and asking for everything else to stay exactly the same, and OpenAI's ChatGPT guide likewise tells you to name the change and everything that has to stay put. Wrap any scene above like this: "Change only the background to an empty sandy beach at golden hour. Keep the person, face, hair, clothing and pose exactly the same."
Inside Gemini, add your photo, type the request and send it. Editing is open to users 18 and over, and free downloads are 1K. ChatGPT takes the same wording with your photo attached to the message. OpenAI recommends small revisions, one element at a time, because details can drift, so check the face against your original in both apps.
Tips for better AI background results
- Match the light to your photo. If your face is brighter on the left, write "light from the left". A background lit from the opposite side makes the subject look cut out and pasted on.
- Match the camera height. A product shot from above needs a surface seen from above, and a headshot taken at eye level needs a background seen at eye level.
- Keep the background quieter than the subject. Ask for "softly blurred" or "slightly out of focus" behind a portrait, the way a portrait lens would render it.
- Use a real photo for a real place. For your own shop, office or garden, switch "New background" to "Use my picture" and upload a photo of the place. Background Swapper's own hint says a clear scene with lighting similar to your photo works best.
- Describe empty places positively. Google's guide suggests describing the scene you want rather than only listing what to leave out, so write "an empty, quiet beach" instead of "no people on the beach". Put "empty" or "quiet" into café and street scenes too, so the result shows only your subject.
