Why people look for a remove.bg alternative
The biggest reason is on remove.bg's own site, and the rest come from its pricing and help pages. Each one points to a different kind of replacement.
- The standalone site is closing. From December 1, 2026 at 9:00 AM CET, remove.bg's website will no longer be available. Background removal moves to Canva, and the self-service API moves to Leonardo.Ai, both owned by Canva. Subscriptions end automatically on that date, remove.bg says annual subscribers get a pro-rata refund for unused time, and unused pay-as-you-go credits expire that day.
- The free file is small. remove.bg is free for images processed on its website at up to 0.25 megapixels, for example 625 x 400 pixels. A full-resolution download, up to 50 megapixels, costs 1 credit.
- Free means personal use. remove.bg restricts its free plan and no-account use to non-commercial work. Selling products with the cutout on your website counts as commercial use.
- Credits reset. Subscription credits are valid only for the month they belong to and don't carry over. A shop that edits 12 photos one month and 80 the next pays for the peak or buys pay-as-you-go packs.
- You wanted a new background, not a blank one. remove.bg's editor can build an AI scene behind the subject, but that feature is in beta, each generation costs 1 credit, and the HD download costs another. An editor built to replace backgrounds may fit that job better.
remove.bg names Canva's Background Remover as its own replacement and says it uses the same background-removal technology. remove.bg's site also identifies it as a brand of Canva Austria GmbH, so moving to Canva keeps you with the same company.

Photoroom is a product-photo editor for mobile and desktop, and its Background Remover is one of its core tools. You can start free, and Photoroom says upgrading adds more AI tools and high-resolution exports. Pro costs $7.50 per month billed yearly ($89.99 a year) or $12.99 month to month, and includes 8,000 AI credits and 1,000 exports a month. Background removal carries no credit cost on paid plans, within fair-use limits, but each saved image counts as an export. Export limits apply to images up to 2K, and 4K output is only on Ultra and Enterprise. Photoroom refunds purchases up to a week after you buy, and its terms limit free accounts to personal, non-commercial use. It fits an online seller who needs white or colored backgrounds, shadows and a batch of listings in one place.
Adobe Firefly background remover
Adobe's free background remover runs in Adobe Firefly. You sign in with your Adobe ID (a free account works), upload one JPEG, PNG or WEBP file up to 50 MB, and download the result as a transparent PNG. Free users draw on Firefly's free daily generations, and Adobe says a paid Firefly plan lifts that limit for the remover. As of September 2026, paid Firefly plans begin at US$9.99 a month (Firefly Standard). Adobe asks you to confirm you're 18 or older when you upload. It fits someone who needs a transparent PNG a few times a week and already has an Adobe account.
Pixlr Background Remover
Pixlr is a browser photo editor, and its Background Remover is free. It accepts JPEG, PNG and BMP files, and when you save you pick transparent, black or white for the background. Batch processing lets you select several photos, clear every background, and save them together as a zip. Paid plans start with Plus at $2.49 per month ($1.99 per month billed yearly), which removes ads and adds 80 AI credits a month. It fits a search for a free remove.bg alternative that is really a request for free batches, such as a seller clearing 30 craft-fair photos at once.
Built-in tools on Mac, iPhone and Windows
You may not need a website at all. In Preview on a Mac, open the image and use the remove background control in the toolbar. Preview may offer to turn the file into a PNG. To keep the original, pick Cancel, then File, then Duplicate, and work on the copy. On an iPhone, touch and hold the subject in Photos until an outline appears, then choose Copy Subject, Add Sticker or Share. rembg
rembg is a free, open-source background remover. It runs as a command line tool, a Python library or a local HTTP server, needs Python 3.11 to 3.13, and works on a CPU or a supported graphics card. Its p command processes a whole folder in one go. The MIT license covers rembg itself, not the models it downloads: the default model, BRIA's RMBG-2.0, needs a paid license from BRIA before any commercial use, so check the license of the model you pick before cutting out product photos. It fits someone comfortable with a terminal who has hundreds of images and doesn't want to pay per file.
Toybox Background Swapper
Background Swapper in Toybox AI replaces a photo's background and keeps the subject. You upload "Your photo", then under "New background" either keep "Pick a scene" and choose Match the vibe, Nature, City, Mountains, Beach, Studio or Custom, or switch to "Use my picture" and upload the backdrop you want. Custom takes a description of up to 240 characters. Under More options, "Look up real places" checks Google Images so a landmark looks right, for 10 extra credits. Background Swapper replaces backgrounds; it doesn't cut out to transparency, and the "Studio" backdrop isn't a guaranteed pure white.

Work backward from the file you need to hand over at the end.
- You need full-resolution cutouts every day for a business. Choose Photoroom, or follow remove.bg's own pointer to Canva's Background Remover. Photoroom's paid plans are licensed for business use (its free tier is personal use only), and it adds shadows and batch exports for product listings.
