An AI Polaroid prompt makes a picture that looks like an instant camera print: a snapshot lit by a flash, with a thick white border, usually of you now hugging yourself as a child. Every prompt here is set up for Image Generator in Toybox AI, which lets you attach up to 3 reference photos and describe the scene. Gemini and ChatGPT accept the same text as a first draft, though each app draws faces its own way. The hug version needs two photos of you, one recent and one from childhood. The solo versions need one.
Where the AI Polaroid trend came from
The hug-your-younger-self version of the AI Polaroid trend grew out of the Gemini app's Nano Banana image model in September 2025. Google's own list of Nano Banana examples, published September 12, 2025, already showed an adult having a tea party with their childhood self. Four days later, The Hindu listed pictures of people hugging their younger selves among the popular Nano Banana prompts. By October, CNET was describing a "hug baby me" trend on Instagram and TikTok.
The prompt CNET's writer used asked for a Polaroid camera photo taken with a flash, the two of them hugging and smiling, and every face and feature kept the same. The hug trend came out of the same Gemini wave as the 3D figurine prompt, and the AI photo trend prompts list the looks that followed. Polaroid is a camera brand, so the prompts here say "instant camera photo" and ask for a border with no logos, to help keep brand names off the frame.
How a good AI Polaroid prompt is built
Five parts turn two ordinary photos into one believable snapshot:
- Who is who. Name each person by something visible in their photo, such as "the adult in the green sweater" and "the girl in the yellow raincoat". That way the prompt doesn't depend on which photo you uploaded first.
- The pose. A hug from behind, a kneeling hug at the child's height, holding hands, or sitting side by side.
- The camera. Direct flash, a little blur, soft faded color and a white border that is wider at the bottom.
- The background. A plain curtain, a painted wall, a backyard or a childhood bedroom. One simple backdrop keeps attention on the faces.
- What stays the same. "Keep both faces exactly as they are in the photos."

Pictures with someone who has died
Some people use the trend to picture a hug with a parent or grandparent who has died. The picture is imagined, not a memory, and it can land harder on the rest of the family than you expect, so talk with them before you make or share one. A real photo is often the better keepsake: scan it, restore the old photo, and frame the print. Tips for better AI Polaroid results
Pick two photos with the same angle. A front-facing photo now and a front-facing childhood photo line up better than a profile next to a head-on shot. Crop each one so only you are in it.
Scan the childhood print flat. A phone photo of a print taken at an angle adds glare and a skewed face. Lay the print flat in daylight and shoot straight down, or use a scanner, and restore a faded print first.
Describe the camera, not a brand. Google's Nano Banana prompting guide suggests naming the camera to set the look, and gives a cheap disposable camera as its example for an old flash-lit snapshot. "Direct flash, slight blur, faded color" describes the instant print without a brand name.
Fix faces from the original photos. When CNET's writer asked Gemini to make her hair a touch lighter on a finished hug photo, it came back very blonde in a different style. If a face or hairstyle is wrong, go back to your two original photos and generate again with a clearer description, instead of editing the result again and again.
Choose the shape first. In Image Generator, Square (1:1) suits a single print and Portrait (3:4) suits a print lying on a table. Instagram keeps photos at their original shape up to 3:4 tall, so both post to the feed uncropped.
Turn on Enhanced quality for handwriting. Image Generator's "Enhanced quality" switch under More options is meant for "Sharper text and logos, best for designs with words", and adds 45 credits. Use it only when the border has a caption.

Make your hug photo in Image Generator
