What the ChatGPT 80s trend is
The AI 80s trend is a selfie redrawn as if it had been taken in the 1980s, with the hair, clothes and film look of the decade. Google promotes the idea on its own Gemini image page, which suggests "80s preppy" and "90s grunge" makeovers and gives a one-line sample prompt that turns an uploaded photo into a retro mall studio portrait.
In ChatGPT, the trend works the same way: you attach a photo to a chat and describe the change. OpenAI's ChatGPT image guide says an edit request should name the change and also list what has to stay untouched, which is why every prompt here ends with a keep line.

How a good 80s photo prompt is built
An 80s prompt works best when it names six things, in this order:
- The kind of photo. A mall portrait studio shot, a flash snapshot at a party, a prom photo, an office portrait.
- The hair. A perm, teased volume, feathered layers, a side ponytail, a mullet.
- The clothes and accessories. A denim jacket, shoulder pads, a windbreaker, big earrings, oversized glasses.
- The setting and light. A mottled studio backdrop, wood paneling, neon, on-camera flash.
- The film look. Soft grain, slightly faded warm color, a little softness at the edges.
- The keep line. "Keep my face exactly the same" plus the features that matter to you.

Tips for better 80s photo results
- Pick one kind of photo. A mall studio portrait and a flash snapshot need different light, so choose one per prompt.
- Describe the hair by how it looks. "Big teased perm with a side part" gives the editor more to work with than "80s hair".
- Describe the film look in plain words. Grain, faded warm color, on-camera flash and soft focus are what make a picture read as a print.
- Ask for plain clothes. Add "no logos or brand names" so nothing on the outfit looks like a real label.
- Decide about your glasses. Write "keep my glasses" or "swap my glasses for large 80s frames"; don't leave it open.
