What makes a good thumbnail is how fast it tells someone scrolling past what the video is and why it's worth a click. In practice that means one subject, a few large words, strong contrast and a promise the video keeps. YouTube's creator tips say 90% of its best-performing videos have a custom thumbnail. The checklist comes first, then a weak and a strong version of one thumbnail, how to pair it with a title, and the extra rules for gaming, podcast and Roblox thumbnails.
What makes a good thumbnail for YouTube
A good YouTube thumbnail passes these nine checks:
- One focal point. Pick the single thing the video is about, such as a face, a product or a finished result, and make it big. YouTube's tips warn against an overly complex design: bold color and composition help, until there's too much of both.
- About three words, or none. Short text in a heavy, easy-to-read font survives being shrunk. A nine-word line has to be set so small that it's hard to read on a phone.
- Text that adds to the title. If the title says "How to Fix a Squeaky Floor", the thumbnail can say "NO MORE SQUEAK" instead of repeating it.
- A face with one clear emotion, when a person is part of the story. For videos aimed at casual viewers, YouTube suggests relatable actions and emotions, like a shocked face.
- Contrast between subject and background. Light against dark: a bright subject over a dark backdrop, or dark text over a light area. If both sit in the same color family, darken or blur the background.
- The rule of thirds. YouTube's tips suggest it for more interesting images: imagine two lines across the frame and two down, and put the subject where they cross. Then add your branding and text on top.
- A look viewers recognize. Reuse the same fonts, colors and layout from video to video. YouTube's branding tips say brands are easy to remember when their visuals stay consistent.
- An honest promise. The video has to show what the thumbnail shows. YouTube's spam policy bans maliciously misleading thumbnails, and its analytics help says clickbait tends to get low average view duration and fewer recommendations.
- The right file. A 16:9 image, ideally 3840 x 2160 pixels. The YouTube thumbnail size guide has every number, and Shorts, which use 9:16, are covered in the AI video guide for YouTube Shorts.
Check it at phone size before you upload
A thumbnail that looks fine on a laptop can fall apart on a phone. Shrink your design to about the width of your thumb on the phone screen and look at it for one second: you should be able to name the subject and read every word.
Then turn the image black and white. If the subject melts into the background, the contrast is too low. Last, put it next to thumbnails from the last few videos you watched on the same topic. YouTube's analytics help points out that your thumbnail always competes with other videos, on Home, in Up Next, in search results and in subscription feeds.
A weak and a strong thumbnail for the same video
Take a hypothetical DIY video titled "How to Fix a Squeaky Floor Without Pulling Up Boards". Here is how two versions of its thumbnail compare:
| Element | Weak version | Stronger version |
|---|---|---|
| Subject | A wide photo of the whole living room | A close-up of a hand driving a screw into the floor seam |
| Text | "HOW TO FIX A SQUEAKY FLOOR WITHOUT PULLING UP BOARDS" | "NO MORE SQUEAK" |
| Person | None, or a small neutral face in a corner | The creator wincing, one finger to their ear |
| Color | Beige floor, beige wall, white text | Warm wood, dark background, white text with a black outline |
| Promise | The same words as the title | The result, while the title explains how |
The weak version repeats the title and gives the eye nowhere to land. The stronger one shows the exact moment of the fix in three words and lets the title do the explaining. A prompt for the stronger version, written for the "Describe your thumbnail" box in YouTube Thumbnail Generator:
Close-up of a hand driving a trim screw into the seam of a honey-colored hardwood floor, with a bright yellow arrow pointing at the screw. The creator from my photo on the right of the frame, wincing, one finger to their ear. Heavy white letters with a black outline on the left: "NO MORE SQUEAK". Warm light, dark background, high contrast. How a good thumbnail and title work together
A good thumbnail and title split the work: the title tells search what the video covers, and the thumbnail shows the moment that makes someone curious. For titles, YouTube advises accuracy and brevity: lead with the most important words, push episode numbers and branding to the end, and keep ALL CAPS and emoji for emphasis. It also describes two kinds of titles: searchable ones that say exactly what to expect, and intriguing ones for viewers who weren't looking for that topic.
These fictional pairings show the split:
| Title | Thumbnail text | Picture |
|---|---|---|
| "Sourdough for Beginners: 5 Mistakes From My First Month" | "FLAT AGAIN" | A dense, flat loaf next to a tall, airy one |
| "Is a $300 Standing Desk Worth It After a Year?" | "1 YEAR LATER" | The desk with its wobbly leg circled in red |
| "Paying Off $18,000 in 14 Months on One Income" | "$0 LEFT" | A printed statement showing a zero balance |
| "Rainy Day Hike to the Upper Falls" | No text | The falls in fog, with a small figure in a yellow raincoat |
The first three pair a searchable title with a short, emotional hook. The last one is a vlog, where the scene itself is the hook and text is optional.
Gaming, podcast and Roblox thumbnails
Gaming, podcast and Roblox thumbnails each need one extra thing beyond the checklist.
What makes a good gaming thumbnail
A good gaming thumbnail shows one moment of stakes from the game: the boss, the build, the near miss or the reward. Saturated colors and dark edges keep that moment readable next to other gaming thumbnails, and a face-cam reaction adds the emotion. Grab real screenshots while you record. YouTube Thumbnail Generator accepts up to 3 of them as "Photos of what you're featuring", and its Gaming style is described as "Neon energy and action".

Behind them, a giant crystal golem rising out of a frozen lake in an original fantasy survival game, with a tiny player character running away across the ice. Bold yellow text at the top right: "IT WOKE UP". Saturated colors, dark edges. What makes a good podcast thumbnail
A good podcast thumbnail on YouTube is an episode thumbnail: a 16:9 image with the guest's face, a short quote or topic, and the same layout every week so returning viewers spot the new episode. Keep the show's name small in a corner, since the guest and the line are what change. The show itself is a playlist that needs a separate square cover, sized in the thumbnail size guide.
A podcast guest from my photo in the center, half-smiling, sharp and well lit, with two blurred microphones and warm studio lights behind. A short quote in large cream letters on the left side: "I QUIT AT 41". Deep green and cream colors, calm and confident, lots of empty space around the face. What makes a good Roblox thumbnail
A Roblox thumbnail can mean two things, and the rules differ. For a YouTube video about a Roblox game, everything above applies. For your own game's thumbnails on Roblox, the Creator Hub asks for 16:9 images, ideally 1920 x 1080 pixels. A game's detail page can show as many as 10 images or videos, and Roblox moderates every one against its Community Rules. The Creator Hub also advises:
- Show the real game. A thumbnail should give a clear idea of what players will find when they join, since ambiguous images confuse people.
- Keep text away from the bottom. Metadata like the player count can cover the bottom of the image.
- Keep several thumbnails active. With 2 to 5 active thumbnails, Roblox's thumbnail personalization shows each player the most relevant one on their Home page. Keep uploads under 3 MB and no larger than 1920 x 1080.
- Refresh them with big updates. Roblox recommends testing new thumbnails with each major update, then leaving them alone until the next one.
An AI thumbnail maker helps with Roblox when you give it real screenshots from your game instead of asking it to invent the game, because the thumbnail has to match what players find. Toybox accounts are for ages 13 and up, and anyone under 18 needs a parent's or guardian's permission.
How to tell if your thumbnail is working
Click-through rate (CTR) is the share of people who watched after seeing your thumbnail on YouTube. According to YouTube, half of the channels and videos on the platform have an impressions CTR between 2% and 10%, so a number in that range is normal. YouTube's tips say to judge a thumbnail with general audiences by the CTR from Home and Suggested during the first 24 hours, looking at videos whose impressions are above average.
Expect CTR to fall as a video spreads. In YouTube's own example, a video's CTR drops from 9% to 3.5% as its impressions grow from 10,000 to 100,000, which means it reached new viewers. A high CTR with low average view duration is the pattern YouTube associates with clickbait.
To compare two designs head to head, YouTube's A/B test picks the version with the most watch time, and the guide to thumbnail ideas by niche has tips for running one. That's also the fair way to settle the Reddit debates about what makes a good YouTube thumbnail (face or no face, text or none): run both on your own video and let your audience decide.
Build a thumbnail that passes the checklist
YouTube Thumbnail Generator in Toybox AI turns a description, your photo, or both into one 16:9 image.
- Describe the scene in "Describe your thumbnail", or type just your hook into "Text on the thumbnail" (up to 80 characters).
- Add "Your photo" for your own face, with a clear, front-facing expression.
- Under Style, pick Reaction ("Faces, tension, contrast") for a face-led thumbnail like the squeaky floor fix, or Custom to describe your own look.
- Open "More options" for extra pictures: the product or game in "Photos of what you're featuring" (3 at most), or a screenshot in "A thumbnail you like" to borrow its style and energy but not its content.
- Click "Create thumbnail" and run the result through the checklist above at phone size.
- AI can misspell words (why AI gets letters wrong), so keep the text short and regenerate with corrected wording if a letter is off. Pro plans can use "Want to change something?" for the fix instead, currently 85 credits.
Each thumbnail currently costs 80 credits, and the tool is available on the Free plan.
