How to make a meme on iPhone with Markup
Markup is the drawing and text tool built into Photos, Notes and other Apple apps, and it's the fastest way to make a meme on iPhone. Open the photo's editor, then follow Apple's steps for adding text:
- Open the photo in the Photos app, tap the Edit button, then tap the Markup button.
- Tap the Add button in the Markup toolbar, then tap Add Text.
- Tap the text box and type your top line.
- Tap the text tools to change the font, size, style or color. White or yellow text is easiest to read on darker photos.
- Drag the text box to the top of the photo.
- Tap the More button to duplicate the text box, then type your bottom line in the copy and drag it down.
- Tap outside the text box when you're done, then tap Done.

Turn yourself into a sticker
Your iPhone can cut you out of a photo, which makes a reaction sticker you can reuse. Open the photo in full screen and touch and hold yourself until an outline appears. How to take a meme-ready photo
- Exaggerate the expression. Memes get seen small, in a chat bubble or a feed, so a subtle smirk disappears. Push the face further than feels normal.
- Leave room for the text. Keep a strip of plain space above your head and below your chin, so the top and bottom lines don't cover your eyes or mouth.
- Pick a plain background behind the text. A wall, the sky or a closed door keeps the letters readable. Busy shelves behind your head fight with the words.
- Shoot a few frames. Take 5 to 10 photos of the same face and pick the one where the expression peaks.
- Use the original photo. A screenshot, or a copy that's already been through a chat app, is usually lower quality than the original in your camera roll.

The top line sets up a situation everyone knows, and the bottom line turns it. Keep each line under about 6 words, so it fits on one or two lines at phone size. Say it out loud before you post it: if it needs explaining, shorten the setup, not the punchline.

Before you share a meme of a friend
Ask first. A meme of yourself is fair game, but a meme of a friend works only if they laughed when they saw it. Show them the meme before it goes anywhere public, and crop out anyone in the background who didn't agree to be in it.
