To enhance photo quality with AI, first work out what's actually wrong, because a "bad" photo can be dark, grainy, soft, small or faded, and each one calls for a different fix. Google Photos and Samsung Gallery have one-tap AI options, and the iPhone Photos app has an auto-enhance button. One strong AI pass aimed at every problem at once can leave skin looking waxy, so work through the problems one by one. Below: how to spot the problem, steps for each method with and without AI, and a checklist for keeping faces true.
Which photo quality problem you have
Zoom in to full size before you choose a tool. The problem you see decides the fix:

Work in that order: light and color, then noise, then sharpness, then size. Sharpening a grainy photo makes the grain crisper too, and an upscaler enlarges whatever color cast it's given.

How to enhance photo quality with no AI
To enhance photo quality with no AI, use the sliders already in your photo app. They change the pixels you have and never draw new ones, so a face stays the face the camera recorded.
On an iPhone
- In the Photos app, bring up the picture and tap the edit button.
- Choose Adjust.
- Swipe left along the row of settings below the picture to reach Exposure, Brilliance, Highlights and the rest, tap one, and drag its slider.
- Tap a setting's button to flip between the edit and the original.
- Tap Done to keep the edit, or tap Cancel, then Discard Changes.
The same screen has an auto-enhance button that sets light and color for you in one tap. Start there if you're not sure which slider to move, then fine-tune.
In Snapseed
Snapseed is Google's photo editor for Android and iPhone. Its Google Play listing says it has no ads, subscriptions or in-app purchases, and it adds no watermark.
- Open the photo and choose Adjust (Snapseed's Help Center calls the tool Tune Image).
- Swipe up or down on the photo to pick Brightness, Contrast, Saturation, Ambiance, Shadows, Highlights or Warmth, then swipe sideways to change it.
- Open Details, swipe up or down to choose Structure or Sharpening, and swipe sideways to set the amount.
Snapseed's Help Center says Structure brings out texture across the photo without touching the edges of objects, while Sharpening sharpens the fine detail itself. Move either one in small steps and zoom in on eyelashes and hairlines. A bright rim along a person's outline means you've gone too far.
How to enhance photo quality with AI on your phone
The AI buttons make several of those slider moves in one tap, and some also rebuild detail. That rebuilding is where faces start to change, so check each result at full size.
Google Photos on Android or iPhone
- Open the photo in Google Photos and tap Edit.
- Tap Enhance or Dynamic for an automatic fix, or AI Enhance, which uses several tools together and gives you more than one result to pick from.
- Choose one result and tap Save.
Google says output may vary by device. On an iPhone, AI Enhance currently works only in the US with the Google Account language set to English (United States). Most editing tools need 3 GB of RAM plus Android 8.0 or iOS 18 and up. For a soft photo, the Unblur tool sits under Actions in the same editor.
Samsung Galaxy
Galaxy AI studies each photo and may offer edit suggestions, and Remaster is one of them. Open the photo in Gallery and swipe up for its details; if Remaster shows among the suggestions, tap it. Some photos get no suggestions at all. It works on select Galaxy phones and tablets running Android 14 with One UI 6.1 or later.
When Remaster doesn't appear, Samsung's Galaxy Enhance-X app gives you the tools directly, including Brighten, Sharpen and Restore picture. It's in the Galaxy Store and runs on phones with Android 14 and One UI 6.0 or later.
Apple Intelligence on iPhone
With Apple Intelligence on iOS 27, the Photos app has three AI tools: Clean Up, Extend and Reframe. They remove objects and change the framing, and none of them sharpens or denoises a photo. They need an iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max or iPhone 16 model or later. On any iPhone, use the auto-enhance button for light and color, and Google Photos or Snapseed for detail.
Enhance photo quality online or on a computer
To enhance photo quality online, you upload the photo to a website that runs the AI and sends back a new file. That works on any device, but the photo leaves your phone, so read the site's privacy policy, its free-use limit, the output size and whether it adds a watermark. On a computer, Lightroom's Denoise reduces noise while keeping detail, for shots taken in low light or at a high ISO. It works only on raw files, including Apple ProRAW, and saves a new DNG with "Enhance-NR" in the name. It doesn't accept JPEG or HEIC files, so for a phone JPEG use the sliders or an app instead.
Enhance photo quality in 4K for free
4K is a pixel count, 3840 x 2160 for a 16:9 frame, not a look. An enhancer can make a photo cleaner without making it any bigger. To get a 4K file at no cost, enhance the photo first, then enlarge it once with a free upscaler such as Upscayl on a computer. The steps for each upscaler are in how to raise a photo's resolution.
Why AI enhancers change faces
An AI enhancer makes up detail; it can't get back what the camera never recorded. When a face is small, soft or dark, the model fills in eyes, teeth, skin and hair that look plausible, and plausible isn't the same as accurate. Adobe's Photoshop upscaler shows the split in its model choices: it offers Topaz Gigapixel for preserving existing detail and Topaz Bloom for adding new, creative detail.
Before you share or print, zoom all the way in and compare these with the untouched photo:
- Eyes. Eye color, the shape of the lids, and reflections that moved or doubled.
- Teeth. The same shape, gaps and color as before, not a straight white row.
- Skin. Pores, freckles and lines still there, not a smooth waxy surface.
- Hair. Loose strands intact, not painted into a solid shape.
- Age. Someone who suddenly looks younger or older than on the day.
- Glasses, jewelry and lettering. Frames, earrings and logos redrawn slightly wrong.
If any of those changed, undo and try a lighter method: Enhance instead of AI Enhance, or the manual sliders. For tools that take a note, say what to keep, such as "keep her freckles and natural skin texture". Keep the untouched original of anything that serves as a record, like an insurance photo.
Tips for keeping an enhanced photo natural
- Edit a copy. Use Save as copy in Google Photos, and hold on to the untouched file of anything you'll print.
- Flip back to the original often. In iPhone Photos, tap a setting's button to see the photo without that change. In Lightroom's Enhance dialog, press and hold the preview.
- Check every face in a group shot. Faces at the back have the fewest pixels, so they get the most guessed detail.
- Enhance once. Running a photo through two AI enhancers stacks two rounds of guesses on the same face.

Enhance a photo with Image Unblur or Smart Editor
Image Unblur is Toybox's tool for soft photos. It runs in a web browser, works on the Free plan, and has a "Notes" box for saying what to protect. It rebuilds plausible detail, so a face or small lettering can come out slightly different. It also has no size setting, so treat it as a sharpening step rather than a way to get a larger file.
- Sign in to Toybox (creating an account costs nothing) and pick Image Unblur.
- Add a JPG or PNG of up to 10 MB in the "Your photo" slot.
- Open "More options" and describe in "Notes" (up to 500 characters) what matters and what must stay the same.
- Tap "Sharpen photo". A result usually takes about 30 seconds.
- Check eyes, teeth and any lettering against the untouched photo at full size, then keep the PNG.

Setting Quality to 4K returns up to about 8.3 megapixels, such as 3840 x 2160 for the Wide shape, but that's a redraw, not a pixel-for-pixel upscale. After a result, switch "Editing" between "Latest result" and "Original photo" to build on the newest version or start again from the original.
