Can AI Create an App for Me? What It Can Build and What It Costs

Yes, AI can create an app for you from a plain description. For a one-screen tool such as a quiz, calculator or timer, a mini app maker writes a single working web page. For an app with logins, saved data or payments, use a full app builder such as Lovable, Bolt or Replit, and expect monthly fees, plus store fees if you publish it.

Yes, AI can create an app for you, and the kind of app decides how far one description gets you. A one-screen tool, like a quiz for your class or a bill splitter for a dinner out, can start from one short request, such as "create an app for me that splits a dinner bill". An app with user accounts, saved data and payments is a software project: AI builders shorten it, but you still test it, pay monthly fees and follow the app store rules. Here is what each kind of builder makes, what it costs, and how to describe your app so the first version works.

What AI can build for you, from a quiz to a full app

The size of the app decides the builder. The main routes, as of September 2026:

What you want Kind of builder Examples Cost to start
A one-screen tool: quiz, calculator, timer, score keeper Mini app maker Toybox AI's Mini App Creator; code blocks in ChatGPT 200 credits on a Toybox Pro plan
A business website with a few pages AI website builder Wix Free with Wix branding; Premium to use your own domain
A web app with logins, a database or payments Full app builder Lovable, Bolt, Replit Free tiers on Lovable and Bolt; paid plans from $20 to $25 a month
An Android phone app Full app builder with an Android option Google AI Studio Build mode AI Studio warns before an app could incur costs; Google Play charges US$25 once to publish
An app in Apple's App Store An app builder that supports iPhone apps Check each builder's own docs Apple Developer Program, $99 a year

Mini apps: one screen, one file

A mini app is a single web page that does one job, with its buttons and logic built in. Toybox's Mini App Creator builds one from "Describe your app" as one HTML file, with a live preview, a Download button for the .html file, "Open in new tab", and a public Share page. It has no database, login, payments, hosting or backend, so it can't remember other people's answers or take money. ChatGPT offers a lighter version of the same idea: since February 19, 2026, its code blocks can show a working preview of diagrams and small apps inside the chat, and you copy the code out to use it.

Full app builders: logins, data and hosting

A full app builder writes a whole project, hosts it, and keeps changing it as you chat. Lovable's Free plan gives 5 build credits a day, up to 30 a month, and Pro costs $25 a month with 100 monthly credits, custom domains and no Lovable badge. Lovable spends the same credits on building, hosting and any AI features inside your app, and its credits aren't refundable. Bolt's Free plan includes 1 million tokens a month with Bolt branding on your sites, and Pro is $25 a month billed monthly, starting at 10 million tokens. Replit Core is $20 a month, or $18 a month billed annually.

Google AI Studio's Build mode can generate two kinds of project: a full-stack web app, or an Android app in Kotlin with Jetpack Compose. You can try the Android app in an emulator in your browser, install it on a phone, and send it to the Play Store as a test release. Web apps can be deployed to Google Cloud Run, which may charge for usage, or downloaded as a ZIP file.

Where AI-built apps still need you

The builder writes the code, but five checks stay with you.

  • Testing on real phones. Tap every button, type wrong answers on purpose, and turn the phone sideways. A preview on a laptop can hide a layout that breaks on a small screen.
  • Other people's data. Once an app stores names, emails or payments, you're the one answerable for keeping them safe. Google AI Studio keeps your Gemini API key in server-side code, never in the browser, but anyone you share the project with can see and copy its code.
  • Costs that grow with use. Lovable spends credits on hosting and AI features as well as building, Bolt's plans cap tokens and web requests, and AI Studio counts API calls from your shared app against your usage limits.
  • Store review. Apple's App Review Guidelines say an app should offer features, content and design beyond a repackaged website, and that an app without lasting value or real usefulness may not be accepted.
  • Your own copy. Download the files. AI Studio exports a ZIP file, and Mini App Creator downloads a single .html file, though an app that loads icons from the internet may not work fully offline.

How to get AI to create an app for me

Describe the app the way you'd explain it to a friend who has never seen it: who uses it, what they tap, and what they see after.

  1. Write one sentence on who uses it and what it does.
  2. List what goes in (answers, numbers, names) and what comes out (a score, a total, a timer).
  3. Say how it should look on a phone: large buttons, readable text, the colors you want.
  4. Decide whether it has to remember anything between visits or share data between people. If it does, use a full app builder.
  5. Build it, then test every button before you share it.
  6. Ask for one change at a time, such as "make the buttons bigger" or "add a Try again button".

These descriptions are written for the "Describe your app" box in Mini App Creator. Keep yours short and focused, because very long descriptions are cut.

A 10-question multiple-choice quiz about the water cycle for fifth graders. Show one question at a time with four large answer buttons. After a tap, turn the right answer green and a wrong pick red, then show a Next button. At the end, show the score out of 10 and a Try again button. Bright blue and white colors, text large enough to read on a phone.
A bake sale cash calculator for a school table. Buttons for cupcakes at $2.50, cookies at 2 for $1, brownies at $1.50 and lemonade at $1. Each tap adds the item to a list with a running total. A box to type the cash handed over shows the change due. A big Clear button starts the next sale.
A dinner bill splitter. Type the bill total, pick a tip of 15, 18 or 20 percent, and choose the number of people from 1 to 12. Show the tip amount, the total with tip, and what each person pays, rounded up to the next cent. One screen, large numbers, dark text on a white background.

Can AI make a website for me?

Yes. AI can create a website for you in three common ways, and the right one depends on what the site has to do:

  • A business site with pages. Wix's AI website builder creates a site from a prompt and starts free. Free sites use a Wix web address and Wix branding; a Premium plan connects your own domain and removes the branding.
  • A single interactive page. A mini app maker writes one HTML file. GitHub Pages hosts HTML, CSS and JavaScript files for free from a public repository on GitHub Free.
  • A site with logins or payments. A full app builder such as Lovable or Bolt hosts the site and its database.

Can ChatGPT make a website?

Yes, on Plus and higher plans. ChatGPT Sites entered public beta on July 9, 2026: you describe the site, review a private preview, and then share or publish it. OpenAI says Sites isn't available on the Free or Go plans, and at launch, public publishing wasn't offered in the United Kingdom, Switzerland or the EEA. On the Free and Go plans, ChatGPT can still write the code for a page, which you then host yourself.

Publishing on the App Store and Google Play

Many small tools never need a store, because a web link opens in any phone's browser. If you do want a store listing, budget for these:

  • Apple App Store. The Apple Developer Program is a $99 annual membership. TestFlight lets up to 10,000 external testers try your app before release, and App Review expects more than a repackaged website.
  • Google Play. A developer account costs a one-time US$25 registration fee, and Google may ask for a credit card and a government ID, both in your legal name. Google Play doesn't refund the fee if that information is found invalid. New personal developer accounts must also meet Google's app testing requirements before an app can go live.
  • Your builder's export. Check that your builder produces a real phone app for the store you want. Google AI Studio produces native Android projects; for iPhone apps, read your builder's own docs before you pay for a plan.

Build a one-screen app in Mini App Creator

For a quiz, a calculator or a timer, Mini App Creator skips the project setup: you describe the app and get one working page. It's a Pro-plan tool, currently 200 credits per app; current plans are on the pricing page.

  1. Open Mini App Creator and sign in with a Pro plan.
  2. In "Describe your app", say what it does and who it's for, using the steps above.
  3. Tap "Build app" and watch the preview come together.
  4. Test every button in the preview, then choose "Open in new tab" to try it full screen on your phone.
  5. Download the .html file, or save or share it right away. Mini apps don't appear in the Recent strip, so keep your own copy before you leave the page.
  6. If you need logins, saved data or payments, take the idea to a full app builder instead.

A mini app is one file with no database or login, so anything it shows lives on that page. For other jobs, such as pictures, flyers or video, the tool finder matches each job to a Toybox tool, and the pictures, edits and clips AI can make covers the rest. Frequently asked questions

Can AI create an app for me for free?

Yes, for a first version. Lovable's Free plan gives 5 build credits a day, up to 30 a month, and Bolt's Free plan includes 1 million tokens a month with Bolt branding on sites. Google AI Studio's Build mode generates web and Android apps and warns you before an app could run up costs. Toybox's Mini App Creator needs a Pro plan and currently costs 200 credits.

Can AI make an app for me without coding?

Yes. Every builder on this list takes a plain-language description and writes the code: Lovable and Bolt build and host web apps from a chat, and Google AI Studio's Build mode can generate a native Android app in Kotlin. You still test it on a real phone, and you decide how users' data is handled before anyone signs up.

Can AI create a website for me for free?

Yes, with limits on each free plan. Wix's AI website builder makes a site from a prompt at no cost, but free sites use a Wix web address and Wix branding. Bolt's Free plan hosts sites with Bolt branding, and GitHub Pages hosts HTML, CSS and JavaScript files for free from a public repository. On Wix and Bolt, your own domain needs a paid plan.

What AI tool can I use to build a website?

Match the tool to the site. Wix's AI website builder creates a business site from a prompt for free with Wix branding, and a Premium plan connects your own domain. ChatGPT Sites builds shareable sites on Plus and higher plans, not Free or Go. For a single interactive page, a mini app maker is enough, and full app builders such as Lovable handle sites with logins.

What does it cost to put an AI-made app in the app stores?

Apple's Developer Program costs $99 a year, and a Google Play developer account costs a one-time US$25 registration fee, with possible ID checks. Apple's App Review Guidelines also say an app should offer more than a repackaged website, or it may not be accepted. A web link costs nothing to share and opens on any phone.

Who owns the code AI writes for me?

It depends on the builder's terms. Toybox's Terms of Service say you own the rights to the outputs you generate, which they list as images, text, video and code, subject to the Terms. Read each builder's terms before you sell an app, and check that any icons, fonts or images it loads allow your use.
