A tote bag mockup shows your print on a canvas bag: on someone's shoulder, hanging from a market stall, or flat on a table with a book and sunglasses spilling out. Totes look simple, but three things change the picture: the weave of the canvas, the strap length that sets where the bag hangs, and the side panel on a boxed tote. Below are common tote sizes, staging notes for a printed bag in Toybox AI's Product Mockup, free templates, and the limits of AI scenes.
Tote bag sizes that change the mockup
Tote dimensions decide how the bag sits in a photo and how big your print looks on it. Printful's catalog had these totes as of September 2026:

The third number on the Econscious totes, 5 inches, is the depth. A bag with depth has a gusset, a side panel that lets it stand open and shows up as a visible side edge at a three-quarter angle. A flat tote like the AS Colour bag has no side panel, so a straight-on shot shows all of it. Printful rates both Econscious totes for 30 pounds, which is worth showing with a full bag in one scene.
What you can make with a tote bag mockup
Once one tote is printed, a photo of it is all Product Mockup needs to stage the bag in these settings, trying to hold its shape, colors and artwork steady. Every run returns a single image. Select the Scene mentioned under each heading and put its notes in "Anything else?".
On-shoulder model shots
Pick On a model ("Worn or held"). A worn shot shows where the bag hangs against a body:

A close-up shows whether the bag is woven cotton or polyester like the All-Over Print Tote. Photograph the sample in side light, pick Studio, and add:

- Fill the bag before you shoot it. An empty tote folds and buckles. Tissue paper or two books give it the shape it has in use, and every scene starts from that shape.
- Light the canvas from the side. Window light from one side shows the weave, while flat light from the front hides it. Natural cotton should read as fabric, not as a smooth print.
- Shoot light canvas in daylight. Printful sells its Econscious totes in Black and Oyster, not white. Warm bulbs push a light bag toward yellow, and a white backdrop can make it look gray, so check the result's color against the real bag.
- Show the gusset once. For a bag with 5 inches of depth, add a three-quarter shot so buyers see the side panel. A straight-on photo hides it.
- Keep the print flat to the camera. A twisted strap turns the front panel away from the lens, and the print looks narrower. Straighten both straps before you photograph the bag.
Free tote bag mockup templates and downloads
A tote bag mockup template places your artwork on a stock photo of a blank bag, which suits a design you haven't printed yet. There are three free routes:
- Supplier generators. Printful makes mockups at no charge for its whole range, totes among them, using the bag it will actually print. Printify offers the same for what it sells.
- Canva. Canva's tote bag mockup generator is free, with a mix of free and premium templates in outdoor settings and on models. Choose one, upload your design, adjust its size, angle and placement, then download. The same design can go on Canva's mug and clothing mockups too.
- PSD files. A tote bag mockup free download is often a PSD file with the artwork held in a smart object layer. Open it in Photopea in a browser and swap your design in, using the Photopea walkthrough for t-shirt templates.
Read each template's license before it goes into a listing. Templates are shared, so a competing shop may list the identical photo with other artwork.
Limits to know
- A flat design file stays flat. Product Mockup stages the bag in your photo. Upload artwork instead and the artwork is what gets staged, as a flat print, not a tote. For a concept, attach the design in Image Generator and write something like "this design screen-printed on a natural canvas tote hanging on a hook"; details of the print can differ from your file.
- Texture can smooth out. Check that the canvas still looks woven in the result. If it looks like plastic, take a closer photo in side light and run it again.
- Straps and stitching can shift. Compare strap width, handle seams and the top hem with your sample before you list.
- One scene per run. Four listing images are four runs, currently 300 credits in Product Mockup.
- No cutouts. Toybox has no transparent output, so each tote image keeps its background.
How to make your tote bag mockup in Product Mockup
The one thing to prepare is a photo of your printed tote: JPG or PNG, 10 MB or less.
- Stuff the tote with tissue paper, hang it on a door or spread it on a plain sheet close to a window, and shoot the printed side straight on.
