AI Product Description Generator for Etsy, Shopify and WooCommerce

An AI product description generator turns the facts you give it, such as material, size, colors, care and who it's for, into listing copy. In Toybox AI, choose "Product description" in AI Writer and paste those facts; it currently costs 5 credits. AI Writer reads text only, so type the details from the label instead of uploading a photo.

An AI product description generator writes listing copy from the facts you give it. In Toybox AI, the tool for it is AI Writer: choose "Product description" as the Type, paste the material, size, colors, care and who the item is for, and it drafts text you copy into Etsy, Shopify or WooCommerce. AI Writer reads text only, so the details come from your notes and labels, not a photo. Below are briefs to paste, each platform's limits, and the checks worth doing before anything goes live.

What you can make with an AI product description generator

AI Writer writes one piece per run, so ask for one listing at a time.

  • An Etsy listing. A title within Etsy's 140 characters, a description, and 13 tag ideas of 20 characters or fewer, in one draft.
  • A Shopify product page. The body text for the product, written from the same facts you'd type into the Shopify admin.
  • A WooCommerce pair. A two-sentence "Product short description" and a longer "Product description" with measurements and care.
  • Variant copy. One line each for three scents, five colors or four sizes, so shoppers can tell them apart without repeating the whole description.
  • A rewrite of supplier text. Paste the wholesaler's paragraph and ask for a new version in your voice, keeping every spec.
  • A used or vintage item description. An AI item description generator is only as honest as its brief, so list the condition, flaws and measurements: a jacket's creased elbows, a lamp's replaced cord.
  • A gift-guide blurb. Two sentences for a holiday collection page or a bundle.
  • A matching social caption. The same facts, rewritten for a post; the Instagram caption generator has caption briefs.

What to put in a product description brief

AI Writer works only from what you type, so every fact the listing needs has to be in the brief. List these, in this order:

  1. What it is, in the words a shopper would search: "stoneware coffee mug", not "vessel".
  2. Material and how it's made. "Hand-thrown stoneware, speckled glaze", "100% merino wool, machine knit".
  3. Measurements with units. Height, width, capacity, weight, ring size.
  4. Colors and variants, named the way your listing names them.
  5. Care. Dishwasher safe, hand wash, dry flat.
  6. What's in the box. One mug, a set of two, a gift box.
  7. Who it's for and when. "A housewarming gift", "for runners in cold weather".
  8. The one true detail that sets it apart. "Each glaze is mixed in small batches, so no two mugs match."
  9. Words to use and words to avoid. Your shop's voice, and any claim you can't back up.
  10. The format you want. "Title, then two short paragraphs, then 13 tags."

Listing limits by platform

Write to the limits of the place the text is going. As of September 2026:

Platform Field Limit or guidance
Etsy Title Up to 140 characters; Etsy suggests fewer than 15 words, no price or shipping, no repeated or subjective words
Etsy Tags Up to 13 tags, each up to 20 characters: letters, numbers and spaces, with apostrophes and hyphens allowed inside words
Etsy Description The item's details, plus the keywords buyers would search for when possible
Etsy Photos Up to 20 photos and 2 short videos, up to 15 seconds each, per listing
Shopify Product description Shopify's built-in AI suggests text from what you enter, free on every plan
WooCommerce Product short description A brief summary of the long description, usually shown beside the product images
WooCommerce Product description The full description; accepts text, images, video embeds and tables

For the photos that go with the text, see the guide to AI product photography.

Product description briefs to paste into AI Writer

Set Type to "Product description" and Length to "Medium" unless the brief says otherwise. Swap in your own product's facts.

For a handmade Etsy item, ask for the title, description and tags together so they match:

Write an Etsy listing for a hand-thrown stoneware coffee mug. Facts: holds 12 oz, 4 inches tall, speckled oat glaze with a brown rim, dishwasher and microwave safe, sold one at a time, each glaze mixed in small batches so no two match. For coffee drinkers and housewarming gifts. Give me a title under 140 characters, then two short paragraphs, then 13 tags of 20 characters or fewer. Plain, warm voice. Use only these facts.

For a Shopify product page, lead with the reason to buy and end with the specs:

Write a Shopify product description for an 8 oz soy wax candle in a reusable amber glass jar. Scent: cedar and orange peel. Cotton wick, about 45 hours of burn time, poured by hand in small batches. For people who want a wood-and-citrus scent that isn't sweet. First paragraph: what it smells like and where to burn it. Second paragraph: size, wax, wick, burn time and a reminder to trim the wick before each burn. No claims about health or the environment.

For WooCommerce, ask for both fields at once and label them:

Write two pieces for a WooCommerce product page for a merino wool beanie. Facts: 100% merino wool, rib knit, one size fits most adults, folded cuff, colors charcoal, moss and rust, hand wash cold and dry flat. First, a Product short description of two sentences. Second, a Product description of three short paragraphs: warmth and feel, fit and colors, care. Label each piece.

For variants, ask for one line per option instead of three full descriptions:

Write one sentence for each scent of our 4 oz shower steamer so shoppers can tell them apart on the product page. Eucalyptus and mint: cooling, for stuffy mornings. Lavender and oat: soft and calm, for evenings. Grapefruit and ginger: bright and sharp, for a wake-up shower. Keep each sentence under 20 words and don't repeat the same adjective twice.

For a supplier's description, paste their text and keep every spec:

Rewrite this supplier description in a friendly, plain voice for my online shop. Keep every measurement, material and care instruction exactly as written, and don't add features that aren't in it. Put the specs at the end as a short list. Supplier text: [paste the supplier's description here]

For a used or vintage item, ask for the flaws in plain view:

Write an item description for a used men's waxed cotton field jacket I'm selling online. Size large, chest 46 inches across when laid flat, sleeves 25 inches. Olive green, brass snaps, corduroy collar, two front pockets. Condition: light creasing on the elbows, one snap stiff, no tears, rewaxed last spring. Start with what it is, then fit, then condition. Honest, no hype.

Tips for better AI product descriptions

  • Put the numbers in the brief. If your notes say "12 oz" and the brief says "roomy mug", the draft can only say roomy. Give the capacity, size and weight, and ask for them in the text.
  • Name the searcher's words. Etsy asks for the keywords buyers would use, and says a tag can be a short phrase such as "silver earrings". Put two or three of those phrases in the brief.
  • Ask for the specs as a list. AI Writer writes plain text and adds a list only when you ask for one, and a list of size, material and care is easier to scan on a phone.
  • Cut the adjectives Etsy flags. Etsy's listing guidance says to avoid subjective words like "perfect" in titles. Delete them from drafts too.
  • Write variants as one line each. Three near-identical descriptions make shoppers compare paragraphs to find the difference.
  • Read it against the product. Hold the item, or its tag, and check every number and material in the draft.

AI product description generator from an image

AI Writer doesn't accept photos, so for a Toybox draft you type what the photo would have shown. No Toybox tool turns a product photo into listing copy. Other tools do read images:

  • ChatGPT. You can attach, paste or drag a photo into a ChatGPT message on the web. OpenAI's own guidance is to say what ChatGPT should look at and what you want back, rather than leaving the image to explain the task.
  • Amazon's listing tools. When Amazon launched its listing AI in 2023, it said sellers could type a short description and get a draft title, bullets and description to refine, and that its models can infer details such as a shirt's collar style from its image.

No AI product description generator from an image, free or paid, can see what isn't in the photo: the fiber content on the care label, the exact capacity, the weight. Confirm those, and every other fact in the draft, before publishing.

Limits to know

  • No photo upload. AI Writer takes typed text only. Workaround: copy the label details, or paste the supplier's spec sheet into the brief.
  • The voice lives in the brief. There's no tone control, so write "plain and warm" or "short and technical" into the request.
  • No formatting in the output. Drafts come back as plain text without headings; ask for a list when you want one, and add bold or headings in your store's editor.
  • Lengths run short. The Short, Medium and Long hints on screen overstate the real length. For a long page, ask for the sections you need by name.
  • It won't check claims. A draft can add "eco-friendly" or "hypoallergenic" on its own. Only claim what you can back up, and delete claims the draft adds by itself.
  • Nothing is sent to your store. Tap Copy and paste the draft into Etsy, Shopify or WooCommerce yourself.

Product photos to match the description

The photo and the text should agree on color and size. Product Mockup places a photo of your real item into a scene such as Studio ("Clean white background"), In hand, Flat lay or Workspace, currently for 75 credits on the Free plan. It tries to keep the item's shape, colors and label as they are, so compare the result with the real thing before you list it. For Etsy-specific scenes and sizes, see how to make mockups for Etsy, and for the seller's full toolkit, AI tools for Etsy sellers and AI tools for Shopify stores.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use an AI product description generator for free?

Shopify's built-in AI features are free on every Shopify plan, and one of them suggests product descriptions from the details you enter. In Toybox, AI Writer currently costs 5 credits per description. Sign-up gives 20 free credits once, enough for four drafts, and you don't need a credit card to create the account.

Can AI write a product description from an image?

Some tools can. ChatGPT takes an attached image, and OpenAI's guidance is to explain in words what it should look at and what to write. In 2023, Amazon said its listing models can infer details such as a shirt's collar style from a photo. AI Writer in Toybox doesn't read photos, so type the facts from the label or tag.

Does Shopify have a built-in product description generator?

Yes. Shopify includes a set of free AI features in the Shopify admin, and one of them generates text suggestions for product descriptions from the information you provide. Shopify says they're free whatever your plan, though specific features can vary. Treat the suggestion as a draft and check each fact against the product.

What goes in a WooCommerce short description?

WooCommerce describes the product short description as a brief summary of the long description, usually shown beside the product images. Use the first two sentences of your AI draft there: what the item is and the one detail that sets it apart. Put measurements, care and what's included in the full Product description.

How long can an Etsy title be?

Etsy titles max out at 140 characters, and Etsy suggests using fewer than 15 words. Say what the item is plus its key details, skip price and shipping, and avoid repeated words and subjective words such as "perfect". Each listing can also carry up to 13 tags of up to 20 characters.

Can I let AI make claims about my product?

Only claims you can back up. AI drafts can add phrases like "eco-friendly" or "hypoallergenic" that you never gave them, so delete anything the draft adds on its own. For the claims you keep, have proof on file, such as a lab report, a supplier spec sheet or a certificate, in case a buyer or the marketplace asks.
