Styles to type in "Describe your song"

The Lyrics box holds the words; "Describe your song" holds the sound. Name the genre, the tempo, the instruments and the voice, and leave out the names of real singers.

Tips for better AI Christmas songs

Put the names in the chorus. A chorus usually comes back more than once, so a name there gets sung again and again. Keep it to three or four names per chorus line; a list of eight cousins won't fit a melody.

Keep lines about the same length. Lines of 7 to 10 syllables, four lines per verse, are easy to sing to one tune. One very long line is hard to fit into the same tune as the short ones.

Lean on the season's easy rhymes. Snow, glow and go; night, light and bright; tree, free and me. Ending chorus lines on winter words keeps the song tied to Christmas when the style is pop punk or reggae instead of sleigh bells.

Respell a name that comes out wrong. If both versions stumble over Siobhan or Niamh, write "Shi-vawn" or "Neev" in the lyrics and run it again. Keep the real spelling in the Song title.

Write the jokes, don't describe them. "A song about our office printer" leaves the joke to chance. "The printer jams on Monday and it jams again today" is the joke.

Limits to know

• Text in, audio out. Music Generator takes no audio, so it can't follow a tune you hum, sing in a relative's voice, or cover a recording. Pick Any, Female or Male under Voice instead.
• Sung mistakes. A name or a whole line can come out garbled in one version and fine in the other. Listen to both all the way through before you send one.
