How a good Ghibli-style video prompt is built

A good Ghibli-style video prompt follows the five-part order in Google's Veo 3.1 prompting guide: camera, subject, action, context, and last, style and mood. For this look, three choices do most of the work:

• Camera: slow or still. "Slow push-in", "gentle pan left" or "camera locked off".
• Action: one or two small motions that fit in 8 seconds, such as rain on glass, steam, a page turning or clouds drifting.
• Style: named first or last, in plain words. "Hand-painted 2D anime style, watercolor backgrounds, soft cel shading."

Google's DeepMind guide says to define the kind of video up front (realistic, animated, stop-motion) and to spell out the sounds you want. Use this template for your own scenes:

Start from a Ghibli-style still

A still image fixes the look before anything moves, which matters when the same scene will appear in several clips. The steps, in order:

1. Repaint a photo in Smart Editor (Pro plan) with an instruction such as "Paint me reading by a rainy window as a soft anime illustration, lit by a warm lamp. Keep my face and sweater color." The Ghibli AI prompt library holds 14 photo prompts to start from.
2. Before you apply the edit, open "More options" and pick the "Shape" that matches the video: Story 9:16 for Vertical, Wide 16:9 for Wide. Frames go into the clip uncropped, so a matching shape keeps the framing predictable.

Tips for better cozy anime video results

Name the style in plain words. Google's DeepMind guide says to set the kind of video first. "Hand-painted 2D anime style with watercolor backgrounds" sets the look without naming a studio.

Move one or two things. Rain plus steam, or wind plus clouds, fills 8 seconds. If faces warp, cut the motion down and let the person stay still.

Build the exclusion into the scene. Google's Veo 3.1 guide suggests describing the scene without the unwanted thing rather than issuing a bare ban, so write "an empty country road with no cars" instead of just "no vehicles".

Give the still the video's shape. Use a 9:16 still for Vertical and a 16:9 still for Wide; Toybox won't crop a mismatched frame to fit.

Use timestamps for two shots. Google's Veo 3.1 guide breaks a single clip into timed segments written like "[00:00-00:02]", one shot per segment. For two shots in 8 seconds, write "[00:00-00:04]" before a wide view of the cabin and "[00:04-00:08]" before a close-up of the kettle.

Choose the length by the motion. "Length" offers 4, 6 or 8 sec, and 8 is the default. One blink or a page turn fits in 4 seconds; falling rain and drifting clouds read better over 8, and a clip with an end frame always runs 8.
