The brief. Five short lines cover it: the room and who uses it, two style words, a budget, what stays, and one problem to solve. For example: "Bedroom, 10 by 11 feet, for a teenager who studies here. Warm modern style. Budget about $300. Keep the bed, the window and the carpet. Needs a desk and a place for a guitar." How to use ChatGPT for interior design

ChatGPT can look at a photo of your room, suggest what to change, and edit the photo in the same conversation. You upload an image and describe the change. Once ChatGPT has made a new picture, you can also highlight one part of it with the selection tool. OpenAI warns that those highlights aren't precise, so an edit can reach past the part you marked. Image inputs work on the Free plan and paid plans, with usage limits that depend on the plan, and ChatGPT tells you when you've reached one. OpenAI's File Uploads FAQ puts the Free plan at 3 file uploads a day, and says it may lower that at peak hours, so pick your one best photo before you start.

1. Open a new chat, tap the + icon, choose "Add photos & files" and pick your room photo (PNG, JPEG or non-animated GIF).
2. Paste your brief and ask for a written plan first: what to move, what to buy, and a rough price for each item.
3. Ask for the picture: "Show this room with that plan. Keep the window, the door and the carpet exactly where they are."
4. To change one area, open the new picture, select that part, and describe the change, such as "replace only the nightstand with a narrow white desk".
5. Save the version you like, then check every size and price it listed against the store's own page.

How to use ChatGPT to redesign a kitchen

A kitchen brief needs one more line than a bedroom: what stays where. Moving the sink, the range or the refrigerator usually means new plumbing, gas or wiring work, so say whether they stay put. Then name each surface on its own, because each one is priced on its own. For example: "Keep the layout, the sink, the range and the refrigerator where they are. Replace the dark oak cabinet doors with flat white fronts and matte black pulls, swap the laminate counter for butcher block, take down the two upper cabinets beside the window for open wood shelves, and replace the fluorescent ceiling box with a flush-mount light." IKEA Kreativ won't help here: it doesn't design full kitchens, and IKEA sends those projects to its separate Kitchen planner.

How to use Gemini to decorate a room

The Gemini app edits a photo of your room from a typed prompt. Google's announcement of the feature lists swapping a background, replacing objects and adding new ones among the edits it takes. To edit images in Gemini Apps you have to be signed in, 18 or older, and in a supported country and language.

1. Open the Gemini app or the Gemini website and sign in.
2. Upload the room photo from your device.
3. Type the change and the keep list, for example "restyle this living room in a warm Scandinavian style with a light wood coffee table and a wool rug, and keep the windows, the fireplace and the wood floor the same", then tap "Submit".
4. On the web, hover over the result and choose "Download full size". In the phone app, touch and hold the picture, then tap "Save".

Downloads are 1K without a Google AI plan and 2K with one, so a free download suits a phone screen more than a printout.

How to use AI to design a room with real furniture

IKEA Kreativ is a free room designer that places IKEA furniture and decor in a picture of your room. It works inside IKEA's phone app for iPhone and Android and on IKEA's website, though only the phone app can capture your room.

1. In the IKEA app, take a new picture of the room or pick one from your camera roll. On a phone with LiDAR, you can scan the whole room to build it in 3D instead.
2. Erase the furniture you're replacing.
3. Add pieces from the IKEA catalog, swap them, and save or share the design.
4. On the website, you can upload a photo, or use the room builder and type your room's dimensions with no scan.

The catalog is IKEA's own, so it fits a room you plan to furnish from one store. Kreativ can't place textiles such as curtains, pillows and blankets yet, or anything hung from the ceiling, like a pendant lamp or a curtain rod. How to redesign my room without AI

A room plan doesn't need AI at all, and a paper plan catches the problems a picture hides, like a dresser drawer that can't open past the bed.

1. Measure the room, the windows, the doors and each piece of furniture you're keeping.
2. Draw the room on graph paper, with one square for every 6 inches.
3. Cut out each piece of furniture at the same scale and move the pieces around the plan.
4. Mark the door swing and leave a walking path from the door to the bed, closet and window.
5. Before you buy anything large, outline it on the floor with painter's tape and walk around it for a day.

Free online planners do the same on screen. Floorplanner's free Basic plan allows up to 5 projects, with standard-definition exports at 960 x 540 px that carry a watermark. Planner 5D's Free plan has unlimited projects and half of its furniture catalog. IKEA's room builder also takes your dimensions by hand.

Tips for a redesign you can actually build

• Check the scale against your notes. If the picture shows a sofa filling a wall you measured at 8 feet, look for sofas under 8 feet, not the one in the picture.
• Count the windows, doors and outlets. A redesign that closes a window or puts a floor lamp nowhere near an outlet has to be adjusted before you shop.
• Name what you're keeping by color and position. "The gray sofa under the window stays" gives the tool something to plan around, where "keep my sofa" doesn't.
• Leave the fixed parts where they are. Radiators, heating vents, ceiling lights and switches don't move without hiring a contractor. If the redesign relocated one, budget for that work or ask for a version that keeps it in place.
• Price it piece by piece. Add up the plan before you commit, and cut the most expensive item first if it runs over.
