OpenAI states image limits per plan in words, not numbers, and warns that they can change over time. As of September 2026, US prices and image limits look like this:

No personal plan comes with an images-per-day number, so a count you read in an older post may no longer apply. The notice in your own account is the limit that counts.
How the ChatGPT image limit per day resets
The ChatGPT image generator limit per day comes back on its own after a wait. OpenAI's Free Tier FAQ says ChatGPT notifies you when you reach a limit, and that you then wait until later before using that tool again. For GPT and model allowances, OpenAI's help pages say ChatGPT shows the reset time in the product when it's available, so check the image notice for a time before you retry.
- Upgrading resets it. If a free account upgrades to Plus, Pro or Business, OpenAI says its usage limits reset.
- Support can't reset it. OpenAI's Pro help page says Support doesn't reset ChatGPT usage limits. Contact Support only if you think your usage was counted wrong, or access doesn't return after the stated reset time.
- Limits can move. The Free Tier FAQ says those limits can change over time, and the File Uploads FAQ says OpenAI may lower upload limits during peak hours.
Text chat stays open while images are capped. OpenAI's help pages say Free and Go users can keep chatting without a cap, apart from safeguards against abuse, so you can plan your next images while the image tool is locked.
Is ChatGPT image generator free?
Yes. ChatGPT Images is on every plan, the free one included, in the browser and in the iOS and Android apps. What changes between plans is how many images you can make before the limit notice appears, how fast they arrive, and a few extras: image generation with Thinking needs Plus, Pro or Business.
Two account settings can block images outright. If a parent has linked a teen's account, the parent may be able to switch the teen's image creation and editing on or off. On work accounts, OpenAI says availability depends on the plan and workspace settings.
A free allowance goes further when each prompt is complete. Every request returns a new image, including a fix made with the selection tool, so a vague prompt that needs three retries uses up three images.
ChatGPT image editing limits
Editing your own photo on a free account runs into two limits: the image allowance and the upload cap. Each edit returns a new image, so budget for edits the same way as for new pictures. Editing your own photo also starts with an upload, and OpenAI's File Uploads FAQ limits free accounts to 3 of those a day. Images can be up to 20 MB each.
Three ways to stretch both limits:
- Edit from your Images library. Every image you make lands in ChatGPT's Images library, and reopening one of those to edit it doesn't need a new upload.
- Use the selection tool for small fixes. Highlight the spot and type what should change there, instead of rewriting the whole prompt. OpenAI notes that highlights aren't always precise, so check the edges.
- Make one change per edit. OpenAI's image guide recommends a single change per round, which saves the retry you'd otherwise spend on a drifted face or sign.

- Read the limit notice and note when you can make images again, if it says.
- Draft your next prompts in text chat. Text chat stays open on Free. Ask ChatGPT to tighten your image prompt, list what's missing (shape, setting, exact wording), or turn one idea into three variations to try after the reset. The AI image prompts library has starting points by category.
- Use another free tool while you wait. The Gemini app makes and edits images with its own daily quota. Gemini's photo editing is limited to adults, and downloads are 1K unless you have a Google AI plan.
- Upgrade if you hit the cap every week. Go costs $8 a month in the US and Plus $20, both billed monthly with no yearly option. OpenAI says a free account's limits reset when it upgrades to Plus, Pro or Business.

Make fewer ChatGPT images count
Every retry uses up allowance, so put everything into the first prompt:
- Set the shape first. Choose from the aspect ratio picker before you generate. Changing the aspect ratio in the editor afterward regenerates the whole image.
- Quote the exact text. Put the words that must appear on the image inside quotation marks, capitalized as you want them, as OpenAI's guide advises. Check the spelling before you send.
- Keep it to a few sentences. OpenAI suggests one to three clear sentences of concrete visual detail (the direction of the light, not "beautiful lighting").
- Name the subject, setting, light and style. OpenAI's guide lists the main subject, the setting, the composition and the visual style among the details that decide whether an image works, and anything you leave out is left to the model.
