Plan the size and shape before you write the prompt, because a painting headed for a wall has to fit a real canvas.

• A canvas print for an anniversary or wedding. A couple's favorite photo as an oil painting, made in the 4:5 shape so it fits 8 x 10 or 16 x 20 inch canvases.
• A royal pet portrait. A dog or cat in a velvet cape and a gold frame, painted like an old master portrait. The AI pet portrait page has more poses and costumes.

Canvas print sizes from a 4K painting

Pixels decide how large a painted photo prints before it looks soft. CanvasPop's guide recommends 150 DPI for canvas prints, and Mpix lists 1600 x 2000 pixels as its minimum for a 16 x 20 inch print and 4000 x 5000 as optimal. The table divides Smart Editor's 4K sizes by each canvas size:

HD is much smaller: the Social shape is 1024 x 1280 pixels, only 64 pixels per inch at 16 x 20 inches and below Mpix's minimum for that size. Choose 4K for anything you'll print. How to make a photo look like a painting without AI

The free manual route uses filters that rearrange your own pixels, so nothing is invented. The result looks more like a filtered photo than a repainted one. GIMP (version 3.2.6 as of September 2026) is free for Windows, Mac and Linux.

1. Open the photo in GIMP and choose Filters, then Artistic, then Oilify.
2. Raise "Mask radius" for a heavier, oilier render. Lowering "Number of intensities" (128 by default) removes more detail.
3. For a canvas texture, choose Filters, then Artistic, then Apply Canvas.
4. Export the result as a new file so the original photo stays untouched.

Tips for better painting results

Name a surface. "On textured watercolor paper" or "on linen canvas" changes the whole finish, not just the color.

Describe the brushwork, not the quality. Write "thick strokes you can see, palette knife in the sky" instead of "masterpiece, ultra detailed", which names no brush, stroke or surface.

Protect faces and hands. Ask for a loose background and smoother, more detailed faces, as in the oil prompt. Then zoom in on eyes and fingers, where smears are easiest to spot.

Crop before you paint. Trim the photo to the part you want on the wall first, so the painting spends its pixels on the subject.

Pick the canvas shape up front. Social 4:5 fits 8 x 10 and 16 x 20 inch canvases, Square fits square canvases, and Original keeps your photo's proportions.

Limits to know

The paint is flat. A canvas print of an AI painting has no raised strokes: the brush texture is part of the printed image, and on a big canvas you'll notice that up close. For an heirloom with real paint on it, commission a painter who works from your photo.

4K has a ceiling. Smart Editor's 4K setting tops out at about 8.3 megapixels, with the long side up to 3,840 pixels, whatever size your original photo is. It's a redraw, not a pixel-for-pixel upscale, and a 24 x 18 inch canvas from a 4:3 photo lands at 138 pixels per inch, under CanvasPop's 150 DPI guideline.

A familiar face can come back unfamiliar. Each edit repaints the whole picture, so a grandparent's portrait may look like someone else. Name the features the family will check first, like the part in her hair or his laugh lines. If the likeness slips, restart from "Original photo" with fewer style words.

How to turn a photo into a painting in Smart Editor
